WHO IS THE UNKNOWN MOTHER OF MY GREAT GRANDFATHER?

I am looking for answers to who the mother was of My 2nd Great Grandfather William Anse Barnes Jr.  He was born in May 1895 supposedly at Newport, TN.

The story in my family is that His father William went to Cocke County TN from Madison County NC to get him when he was born and took him back home to Madison County NC  with him. And gave him the same Namesake of his name.  His Father was William A. Barnes Sr. Born 1856 at Haywood County NC.

They lived in Madison County NC from 1880 - 1900 before they moved to Sevier County TN in 1909 when William remarried for the last time in Dec of 1909.

Perhaps His mother died at childbirth or it was a out of wedlock event and her Family did not approve of the Baby, we really don't know what happened. I assume she was fairly young  maybe born in the 1870's.

  On His death certificate it listed his mother as Unknown NOLAND. I do not know if that is correct or not or if the person who was the informant was just guessing.

I would like to know if anyone knows anything about that. Both My father and my sister and I have tested and we go back to Henry Barnes in DNA matches.

I saw you post and I thought I could help. So I first went to ancestry.com and then to find a grave. Ancestry could not help me as I did not know who he married so I went to Find a grave.org and found this.

I went to find a grave to look up his father to see what information I could find and I found this;  William Anse Barnes was born 1856 and died 1934;  son of Henry Harvey Barnes 1827-1864 & Catherine Elizabeth Caldwell 1826-1910.

He was married 3 times.

1. Laura Seay B. 1860 married March 12, 1876 in Haywood, N.C.  They had 4 children.

2. Wife - Sarah Sallie Whaley 1870 1944- They had no children together  Oct. 1895 in Tennessee.

3. Wife- Carolyn "Tiny" Parton 1883-1947

They married Dec. 1909 in Knoxville, Tn and they had 6 children.

William Barnes in buried in Evans Chapel Cemetery Sevier Co. Tenn Find a grave memorial # 122500919-

My guess who William A. Barnes Jr. mother is Sarah Sallie Whaley. Because I believe they divorced in Oct 1895 and William A Barnes Jr was born in May 1895. But if this is not the case, then he was born to a woman whom William met and did not marry. I will try to keep looking but let me know if you need me for any other searching. Nancy

Actually William A Barnes Married Sallie Whaley in October 1895 and appears to have divorced somewhere after 1900 because he marries 3rd wife Caroline Parton in 1909.

I was told Sallie Whaley Never had any Children.

I think Sallie and William got married so she could help "rear" the children. William had some of his children from 1st wife living with them in 1900 Census at Madison County NC

William A Barnes Jr ( the son ) claimed his mother to be a unknown NOLAND. He was born in May 1895.

William 's last child from previous marriage was born in 1886 and the years are too far apart for me to Think that the 1st wife was the mother of William A. Barnes Jr. I think William 's 1st wife Lula Seay died shortly after the last child was born in 1886.
I agree with you about whoever the mother was and William never married and they happened to produce William Anse Barnes Jr

I just would like to know who she was and what happened between her and William that caused Him to take the baby back with him to Madison County NC. I always wondered if my Great Grandfather knew who his mother was or not.
I went back to Ancestry.com and found this:

1900 Census Madison N. C.

William Barnes - 45;  Sallie Barnes- Age 29;  Catherine Barnes - age 14;  John H Barnes - age 14;  Ance Barnes - age 7;

1910 Census Sevier County, Tennessee

William Barnes -age 40;  Tiny Barnes -18; Ance  Barnes - age 15;

Look at the actual census; and it said that Tiny And William were married less than one year but it also said that she had two children but only one was living.

In the 1920 Census Sevier Tennessee it states that William and Laura are living with her parents, - Joseph & Eliza Williams. His occupation was laborer - Saw mill Timber Cutter.

Let me know if you need more help. Nancy
