how can a profile just disappear?

Question

du Bois-146 is gone... not merged away, but gone. Help?

This was an important profile as it had sources and researched lineage.

You can see it existed in Blanchan-1's bio

But I can't find it merged away into any of the other profiles for Catherine's husband, and WikiTree says neither du_Bois-146 nor Du_Bois-146 exists.

Suggestions?

Of course, new WikiTreers hate how strict we are about deletions. Poor Tami is constantly dealing with nastiness from people who think they should be able to delete anything they've added.

The only way this could happen is if the profile was deleted. That's very strange for a profile of a non-living person, especially one that lived so long ago, and was presumably open.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any way that I can see what happened, since the history of a deleted page is also deleted. :(

I'm beginning to think maybe it never got created? I don't work with gedcoms, but could the upload somehow have tried to create a du Bois-146 but failed?

Lianne/Chris - could you look at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Meteren-25 ? This is a newly created profile, apparently through a ged upload, and includes a bunch of "red" links to profiles in the uploaded bio (to profile IDs that don't exist).

I don't understand how gedcom uploads work, but if files for these people weren't included in the gedcom, would the upload try to create a profile & then, with no info, just leave it in the uploaded profile as a red link? Think that's what happened with the "lost" du Bois profile?

Hi Liz,

In looking at the GEDCOM report, it seems that certain profiles were deleted before import was complete. These were ones from before 1600, which was our cut-off. That is, we prohibited the auto-creation of profiles of people with birthdates before 1600.

That import was from before GEDMatches and all the import changes that went along with it. I think what caused this confusion has been replaced (with other things about imports that cause confusion).

Which is to say ... I realize this is a confusing presentation of information, and the are various things which could be clearer to the person who imports the GEDCOM and others who see the profile. But the import system in 2012 was completely different from what we have now. To talk about improvements, we need to be looking at a new import.
