Ancestors of Ian John McGill b 1931 Motherwell

I have hit a wall with my paternal tree. My father is Stephen McGill, his mother is Billie Ord amd I have some information for her line, however, my grandfathers paternal line is giving me trouble. My great grandmother was Isabella Evans (b: Circa 1903 in Motherwell Scotland) but there is no father noted and I am struggling to find information. Ian John McGill (also known as Jock) was born June 7 1931 in Motherwell Scotland to Isabella Evans.

Being that McGill is recorded as his surname I could only assume that his father was known and was a McGill.

You can search Scottish records at  https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  The site will allow you to do FREE searches, but you need to pay to view the actual register images (costs are very reasonable).

I was unable to find a birth for "Ian John McGILL" in 1931. However I did find a marriage for an Isabella EVANS & Thomas Allan McGILL in 1930 in Blythswood, Lanarkshire Ref. 644/10 172. There were too many "Isabella EVANS" births c1903 to pin anything down (i.e. none at Motherwell, Lanarkshire).

With the details from your Ancestry tree, it appears you know Isabella's parents names, so I would probably view the marriage for Isabella EVANS & Thomas Allan McGILL to confirm if they match your Isabella's parents.  There is only 1 birth in Scotland for "Thomas Allan McGILL" in 1908 (searched 1855-1930). He appears in an Ancestry Tree & died in Canada in 1972.  Isabella's birth reference is: 1903 Dalziel Ref. 639/41.

There is a birth for a "John McGILL" in 1931 Dalziel 639/548.

Thank you Vivian, I have since found that Isabella & Thomas are in fact my great-grandparents.  Thank you for your help as I have also found a connection with a DNA match through the Evans line.
