Marie Simone GUEST lived and married in Falmouth, England but did she arrive there from Mauritius?

+1 vote

Marie Simone Guest married Albert Edward Murphy in St. Mary Immaculate Church. Killigrew Street. Falmouth TR11 3PR  Plymouth Diocese, in Sep 1939.  She claimed to be an orphan, however, she spoke French. A friend has informed me that, although "in English the word orphan means unequivocally a child who has lost both parents, in French you say "orphelin de père/mère" if the child has lost just one parent. So it's not out of the question that my mother had lost her father and used the word orphan as in French."

Now that is useful for genealogists to know, isn't it?

Unfortunately, the National Archives of Mauritius only have the parish records up to 1810, when the British took control, available online. If I had to place a bet, I would say that her name was actually Guet. There is an active Mauritian Genealogy Association, you could join their forum and maybe find someone nice enough to go check the local archives.

Thank you Chris Hampson.  I am very intrigued by your answer because, having looked up the word, "Guet" I find that it can refer to 'the watch' that seafarers keep at night.  My mother used to say, "my people were seafarers", which offers credibility to your answer. Mind you, there were probably many in Mauritius who termed themselves 'seafarer'.

Thank you also for the link to the Mauritian Genealogy Association.  I shall get onto that.
