Found an old Bible with "Powell" family history and want to know who might need it

I have just come into possession an old (printed 1802) family Bible that lists a family history for "Powell" According to an entry on one page, the Bible was purchased in New York on July 30th, 1803 by Elisha Powell, and on various pages lists elements of family history from the late 1700's up to the early 1900's. Unfortunately, the entries list dates but not locations.

It's not connected to my family in any way (that I'm aware of), and I'd like to get it or at least photocopies of the family pages into the hands of someone with family connection to this. Is there a way to get this out to people in that family?

I too have Powell ancestors and would greatly appreciate any information that might be relevant to my search.
My g-g-grandfather was Stephen Powell, born in NY 16 March 1816.  I have been looking a long time for more information on his family.  I would be very interested in seeing a copy of those pages.  Thank you for posting this.
Anything about a William Henry Powell born 1847 to Elizabeth unknown last name possible Dillon or Branham in Greenup KY and the Powell going to Ireland and dying on board ship in 1852/53?
My grandfather was Evert Powell born 1926 Oklahoma.  He was 1 of 14 kids. His father was Jesse Fallis Powell born Cravens Oklahoma 1896. I believe he had 5 siblings. One named Elizabeth Powell and Elmer Leroy Powell. Jesse's parents were Jacob Pinkney Powell and Amanda Elizabeth Greer of Erath TX. I believe Jacobs father may have been William Marion Powell and possibly grandfather John F Powell born in Alabama. Not sure though. If you have info please let me know.  Thanks
I've handed the Bible over to someone locally (literally 2 blocks away) who established a family connection, so I'm no longer in possession. If you want me to try to put the two of you in touch, let me know in reply and we can figure out how to set that up.

Dianna,

I went back through my archives and found some more information from what I originally listed on another social media site. I also have pictures of the some of the pages that included family entries, though I have not had time to figure out how to post these on the wiki. I'll be glad to send those to you and anyone else interested. Send me an email at g2natl@outlook.com and I will send you the images.

The Bible (printed 1802) lists a family history for "Powell", and by other sources I've determined that they were most likely from upstate New York. The volume itself isn't in great shape, so it's primary value would only be that of family connection. According to an entry on one page, the Bible was purchased in New York City on July 30th, 1803 by one Elisha Powell, and on various pages lists elements of family history from the late 1700's up to the early 1900's. Unfortunately, the entries list dates but not locations, but I have found a match in a book on the history of Oswego County, New York, to some of the names listed in the Bible. https://books.google.com/books?id=BskpAQAAMAAJ&lpg=RA1-PA197&ots=bK9793pB09&dq=George%20Powell%20Elisha%20Daniels&pg=RA1-PA197#v=onepage&q=George%20Powell%20Elisha%20Daniels&f=false To help narrow this down, I've transcribed a few of the entries. There are probably 50-60 entries, and I have have pictures for anyone with interest. Seth Powell, b. July 28, 1789, d. August 13, 1796 William Henry Powell, b. October 30, 1791, d. September 30, 1836 Elisha Powell, b. May 22, 1799, d. December 28, 1827 Ann Brown married Elisha Powell August 22, 1812 Eliza Ann Daniels, b. Oct (?) 29, 1821, married George B. Powell June 18, 1845. Eliza Ann d. October 8, 1872 Fanny Powell b. February 7, 1853. Elisha Barclay Powell, b. September 1, 1848
**********************************

My GGGG Grandmother was Phebe Powell born in New York 1768 died Oct. 31, 1829.  I believe that she may have lived in Vermont at the time of her death.  Her parents were Nathaniel Powell born 1739 in Bethpage, Nassau County, New York and Ann Sutton Powell born 1746 in Nine Partners, Dutchess County New York.  I have yet to add them to my WikiTree.  I have them on my Ancestry tree.  I would love to have any information on them!
This is my family. I am downloading the books now. If you still have the bible, can  you please send me pictures or scan it to me so i can upload it to my google drive. Thank you so much!

Hello James, please hang on the bible as I am going to try to find s family that has true connections.    This is a gift like no other to the correct family.   We can give it a try.   I post should I be successful.

Thanks very much Linda. I've posted on some other forums and social media sites I participate in, one never knows where a connection might be made.

Thanks to the kindness of strangers on WikiTree and other sites, I've been able to trace back my own history over 6 centuries (and I promise to update my own tree at some point) and about a year ago I was able to visit the town in England where my first American ancestor came from in the 1600's, even visit the church where other ancestors, as far back as the 1500's, still lay interred in the All Saints Church in Lydd, England. It's been incredibly enriching to me personally, and this is (hopefully) a chance to pay back that kindness just a little.
James, there is enough information on line in regards to this Powell famiy to look further.    Thanks to Charlotte for finding the ebook notes.

George Brown Powell b Jan 18, 1815 NYC...

US, Sons of the American Revolution

SAR 57477

Spouse: Elizabeth Ann Daniels b. Oct 28, 1822 NYC

There is only one researcher on ancestry who has given this information and has research notes for Elisha B. Powell and spouse  Aiddie Gay Wright Married Oct 6 1875 Oswego, NY, with descendants and 1900 census

I am happy to follow through with the researcher to identify if she is indeed a descendant..     this the only researcher with sufficient and sourced documents.  If successful you could get in touch with her.  Oh my goodness,  eureka!
YES! That's awesome
Hi James,

Hi James, I've included some information on the Powell family and hopefully you may find entries in the bible to match that written from his obituary, and we can move forward.   Let me know.

I believe the mother of his four children is Eliza Ann Daniels, 1821-1892

From the obituary for George Brown Powell. 1815-1891 New York

The article notes that George Powell had married twice, his present wife being Sarah Oliphant Meade.  Four children survive from his first marriage.

Elisha B Powell and Miss May B. Powell both of this city and Fred W Powell of Ottawa and Mrs. .M.F. Parade of Chicago.

Michele - I sent pics of the family pages to your email
To help narrow this down, here are some of the entries. There are probably 50-60 entries, and I will be glad to provide pictures to anyone with additional interest, but please be sure to provide me an email address to send them to in your request.

Seth Powell, b. July 28, 1789, d. August 13, 1796

William Henry Powell, b. October 30, 1791, d. September 30, 1836

Elisha Powell, b. May 22, 1799, d. December 28, 1827

Ann Brown married Elisha Powell August 22, 1812

Eliza Ann Daniels, b. Oct (?) 29, 1821, married George B. Powell June 18, 1845. Eliza Ann d. October 8, 1872

Fanny Powell b. February 7, 1853.

Elisha Barclay Powell, b. September 1, 1848

There are more, but I hope this will be enough for people to ascertain any connections.

I'm not related but the family appears to be this family described in part in the book Landmarks of Oswego county (note the match of birthdate and parents of Elisha Barclay Powell in the bible to the Elisha B. Powell described here):

https://books.google.com/books?id=BskpAQAAMAAJ&lpg=RA1-PA197&ots=bK9793pB09&dq=George%20Powell%20Elisha%20Daniels&pg=RA1-PA197#v=onepage&q=George%20Powell%20Elisha%20Daniels&f=false

Powell, Elisha B., was born in Saratoga, September 1, 1848, a son of George B. and Eliza (Daniels) Powell, both now deceased. The father was sheriff of Saratoga county at the time of the war. Elisha B, was educated at Williams College and graduated in the class of 1869. He first engaged in the lumber business, but in 1876 began reading law with Hon. John C. Churchill, and was admitted to the bar in 1879. He began practice in Oswego, where he has ever since continued. He was city attorney in 1887 and 1888, and also superintendent of public warehouses and custom house 1877 to 1881. October 6, 1875, he married Addie M., daughter of Col. J. C. and Adeline F. (Gay) Wright, and their children are Joseph W., born February 15, 1877; George B., born March 8, 1879; and Grosvenor, born January 1, 1887, died August 23, 1890; Barclay, born December 17, 1893. Joseph W. is a student in Annapolis Naval Academy, class of 1897.

Thanks for that Charlotte, that's definitely a match
Please e-mail picture's of all listing for Powell, Ragsdale, and Melton families. I do have Elisha and Elijah Powell from this era in the tree. Badly need sourcing information.
Do you have a link to the free pages? I am curious about Willaiam Henry Powell and if there is marriage and children info for him.

Thanks,

Kitty

James, even in the early 1800s there are more than just one Elisha Powell in New York. If you could also give us several other names and dates, and relationships if stated, we might be able to zero in on the correct Powell family to try to connect with.

Thank you for trying to reconnect this valuable heirloom to its family!

is there a way to upload photos to this thread? I have pictures of the family pages that give much more detail, but do not see a way to show the pics short of uploading them to a separate web page so that I can add a link to the page

James,

You can't upload photos to G2G, but you can make a free space page and put them on it, then post a link here to the free space page.  If profiles for family members are already here or are added in the future, they can also link to the appropriate photos on the free space page.
Thank you!

I have ancestors named Powell - originating in UK - two of the first names are Lucretia, James. I would appreciate any info you could pass on

Pat,

The first entries in this book appear to be American, apparently upstate New York. I'm gong to create a free space page and add the photos of the handwritten entries as soon as possible. I'll comment again on this thread when I have them uploaded.
Thanks

Would there happen to be a John Bowles Powell, or Hardy Powell or Gillis Powell mentioned in the entires ? These are my lines and I am in much need of documentation. Thanks for looking/sharing!

Linda,

I don't see those names, but I'm going to create a free space page and add the photos of the handwritten entries as soon as possible. I'll comment again on this thread when I have them uploaded.
Elisha Powell lived at Milton Hill, Town of Milton, Saratoga County, NY in the 1800s (the area of present day Middle Line Road and Barrett Road).  He owned a store there.  I've been trying to trace his ancestry with no luck. Pictures of the family pages in the bible would be great.  I will see that they are given to the Saratoga County Historical Society for their research room.

If you have any info from the books relating to Lucretia Powell (there are quite a number of Lucretias in this family, the name passed down from mother to daughter) I would like to have that info. The Powell's are my brick wall.

Make good scans (600dpi) of the relevant pages. Use TIFF as the output, if possible (less lossy than std JPG). I can put them into a single PDF for easy distribution; if you are not sure how. You can then easily post to google drive account or similar to make available to others.  If you really do not want the book, FHL and/or BYU will usually be glad to accept it.  Or even BPL (Boston Public Library) or NEGHS in Boston also (as it sounds like an upstate NY family that likely came from Boston -- lots of migration in that path that decade).  All these places accept, process and make family bibles are kept available.

Elisha Powell was a prominent merchant and politician in Milton NY. He was credited with owning the largest general store in the area  in the years around 1800. He ran unsuccessfully for the NYS Assembly and US Congress  several times before finally winning an Assembly seat in 1817. He died in 1854. His son George was the Saratoga County Sheriff in the 1850's. If there is any interest in selling the bible, please let me know. I am currently writing a history of the Town of Milton.

I no longer have the Bible, handed it off to someone I found locally who had a family connection, but I have placed pictures of the family pages from the Bible in a public Google drive folder. Anyone who would like to view them can click this link.
