Most Americans are familiar with the name "Susan B. Anthony" from their high school American history class or because of the silver dollar coin with her likeness that was minted briefly in 1979. Few, however, are aware that the "B" stands for Brownell. Even most Brownells are unaware of her relationship to the family...

Susan's middle name comes from the surname of her uncle, Thomas Brownell, who married her aunt Susanna Anthony, born 1795.  Although middle names often are the maiden names of another family member, perhaps Susan's father wanted to honor his brother-in-law.

Thank you for this information. My mother (b1921 Washington County) recalled hearing as a girl that SBA would visit her relatives nearby and while there would also visit my great-grandmother (Marie-Louise Blawis Wheldon of Greenwich, NY), who was a suffragette and writer. It occurred to me after seeing that SBA's middle name is Brownell that she was probably visiting the Brownells, a large, established family in Washington County.
Yes, there was a large family of Brownells in the Easton and Saratoga Meeting which would have been Washington County early on.  Roby Brownell, one of Thomas' sisters was part of that group.  Susannah were married in 1820...both had been born in East Hoosack which was a Meeting in Berkshire County, MA, not far from Washington Co., NY.  Probably the Anthonys and Brownells were close friends (and members of the same Friends Meeting.  Thomas' parents were Shadrach and Mary Brownell.  I confirmed all of the above information on the Hazard Index.
Do you have any information on Thomas Brownell,,Susan's uncle? Looking for info such as his town/city  and date of birth and his parents.
I found the answers to your question about the Brownell family on the Hazard Index.  They were also members of the Society of Friends and had moved to Washington County, NY, around February of 1812, from Westport, MA, where they had been members of the Acoakset Friends Meeting.

Thomas' parents were Shadrach and Mary Brownell.  I don't have Mary's maiden name.  They had five children: Roby, Anna, Thomas, Elijah and Deborah.

Shadrach was born at Westport, MA, Feb 21, 176_ and died at East Hoosack February 7, 1813.  His wife, Mary was born at New Bedford, MA, September 5, 1774.

The children, all born at Westport, MA, were:

Roby, born Dec 25, 1796; Anna, born Nov 26, 1798; Elijah, born Aug 12, 1806 Deborah, born Sept 10, 1808. Thomas was born at Westport, Aug 14, 1801.  His wife, Susan or Susannah (Anthony) Brownell, was born at Adams, MA, August 4, 1795 and died there April 23, 1821. (198 years ago today!!  Which, is also my birthday, coincidentally enough)

I have Brownell on my family tree but I just noticed that Thomas is not on WikiTree, nor is his wife.  I'm not sure if Shadrach has a profile....

Hope this helps!
