Looking for more traces of Carl Julius Johnsson emigrating to USA

+6 votes
271 views
Carl Julius and two of his brothers emigrated from Sweden (Helsingborg/Malmö) to USA. I have found a record of two of them on one of their trips to USA in 1908. (There is a note that this is not their first trip.)

I can't find any more traces of them, I've been searching with familysearch.org. They have a "bad" surname.

Any tips on other places to look, or does anyone know anything else?

Thanks for looking! It's not any of them, he's born in 1871 (and not from Kalmar, as the only one born in 1871).

Perhaps he left Illinois.

This is surely him, thank you very much!

I wonder what I did wrong in my searching, as I didn't find this.
I entered the information that you provided in your question at familysearch.org and the WWI and WWII draft information came up. The second one in 1942 in Chicago implied that he could have been living there at the time of the 1940 US Census. So, I entered Chicago as the location and selected residence years of 1910 to 1940. That resulted in the 1910 and 1940 census for Carl and his family. Did he marry twice, once to Emelia and then later to Olga, or is it the same spouse?
I have no idea if he married at all, as the family didn't know what happened to him. Wonderful to get some sources! In the draft record for WWI he states his brother John August Johnson as nearest relative, but location unknown. They seem to have lost contact. Thanks again!
I doubt that this is him in the 1910 census. His WWI Draft registration lists his nearest relative as his brother John (Johann) August Johnson & his occupation as a bartender. The person listed in the 1910 census is listed as a retail clothes salesman.

This is probably not him, it says occupation carpenter (and previously he's been into bartending :) ), and looking closer at the name it is Carl R.

I'm happily surprised with the amount of replies and how fast I'm getting them! :)

Could anyone explain what an SS Claim is?

SS stands for Social Security. The most common types of claims noted include: Original SSN (when the original application was submitted to obtain a SSN), Life Claim (when a claim was made for disability or retirement benefits), Death Claim (when a claim was made by a surviving family member for death or survivor benefits

This link should explain the record  (this record is posted on Ancestry):

https://www.legalgenealogist.com/2015/07/28/getting-that-ssn/

Cool, so this is probably him wanting to retire.

You've gotten many great replies, but if you do not live in the Chicagoland area I wanted to make sure you and others were aware of local Swedish American resources:
