Did you see the improvements to the "Merge Edit" page for importing information via WikiTree X?

Hi WikiTreers,

If you use the WikiTree X Chrome extension you may have noticed changes we released today.

Now you can do more editing in one step. When you merge-in information from an external source, you can:

  1. keep the original information,
  2. select the information from the external source, or, and this is the new part,
  3. add or edit information in any way.

I think this will enable better editing in less time.

This user interface is important because we'll be doing more with it.

Aleš has been working on a way to prompt specific edits through WikiTree +. Rather than just alerting you to a possible error, he'll be actually suggesting what to change using this merge-edit interface. I think this is going to be awesome.

Soon we'll also adapt our regular merge interface to match this one (if it works for users) and also work on using it for a new way to import information from GEDCOMs. Good stuff on the way.

Onward and upward,

Chris

Onward and upward indeed! :) Nice one Chris! I love the rootsearch intergration tool too, I use it all the time. It just gets better and better here :)

I am having issues with the wikitree X extension though. I tried deleting it and re-adding it but still no joy. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do to get it to work for me? I'd so love to be able to utilise it.

Also, while I'm here I might as well ask, and I know I whine on about this from time to time (please accept humble apologies) ... but is there likely to ever be a printer friendly option for profiles put in place? I do all my work here now rather than anywhere else as I just love the concept of wikitree, and the big fact it's free forever ~ gives me such a buzz in knowing that anyone anywhere can tap in and learn so much about their ancestry. But I would really love to be able to print off profiles when they are finished for my own records. It really would be awesome :)

Congratulations too on 13,237,349 profiles to date - weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Now that is pretty darn amazing!

Nicky, what problems are you having with the WikiTree X extension?
Hi Justin :)

I added it to chrome and the way I understood it to work was that all I had to do was click on the wee wikitree icon when on one of the supported sites, click whether to create a new profile or add to an existing (this is all from memory as it's been a couple of weeks), but nothing at all happened. After a few tries I deleted the extension, then added it again, and tried again. Still no joy. After a couple of days of giving it a go here and there I ended up deleting it from chrome again. So the problem occurs right at the start with just nothing at all happening, no new boxes opening up, or pages ... I have no idea what was meant to happen next as nothing happened next. It's such a shame because from comments I've seen here it's just awesome! I've just carried on doing my work manually, which yes does take ages (for me, having to get my head around all the wiki language, but getting better all the time!:)). I have a massive to-do list ... at first I concentrated on getting every single profile to my name sourced, thats been done! Now I'm working through it getting every single source inline and the profile itself up to wikitree standard eg the == blurb ==, so they all have the bold headings and contents etc. The wikitree X would be soooooo helpful right now, as with every profile I'm revisiting I'm focussing on sourcing all children etc noted on profiles. I'd really like to get it to work!

I know I'm not contributing anywhere else on wikitree atm, but thats only because I'm cleaning up my own back yard first, I feel I owe that to wikitree first and my ancestors. It was a long haul cleaning up after my initial gedcom import!! Once I've got ticks next to every profile in my to-do list I'm really looking forward to getting involved in some projects here, I've had a couple of ideas for quite some time now, as well as making contributions outside my branch to the tree as a whole. So getting wikitree X to work for me would be amazing!
Nicky, I don't know if this will help but I had the same thing happen yesterday because I hadn't signed in to WIkiTree in the Chrome browser.

Justin, to explain: I usually work in Firefox. I found a record that I wanted to use in WikiX, so I copied the FamilySearch link, opened Chrome, and pasted in the link. The FamilySearch page opened. I went back to Firefox and copied the profile ID of the person I had been working on. Back in Chrome, I pressed the Wiki X icon, pasted in the profile ID and pressed the Go button. Nothing happened. I tried a couple more times and then wondered if it was because Chrome didn't know my WikiTree credentials. I opened a new tab with WikiTree (auto login enabled), then tried the WikiX extension again. It worked perfectly that time.
Is it possible to get the full findagrave link added to the citation? It would save a lot of copy and pasting.
And now it's stopped working for me on one page. Tried to update Orser-127 from https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=148451139 . works fine on other pages.
Aaron it works for me on that Find A Grave memorial. What version of the extension do you have? I'm using 1.1.6 which is the latest version.
I have the same version. I also just tried the "create related" to make a profile from the memorial of one of his children. Everything worked fine.
And now it's stopped working for me enteirely.

If you were wondering what Chris was talking about, here it is.

AutoCorrect implemented

by Aleš Trtnik G2G6 Pilot (804k points)

I dont understand how autocorrect WikiTreeX works see video

Profile Sj%C3%A8okvist-6 has the following errors

  1. Halvy* should be Halvy
  2. LNAB Sjèokvist should be Sjökvist
  3. Gêardstenstorp should be Gårdstenstorp
  4. Gårdstenstorp (Israelstorp), Kila (D)map should be I guess something like below. The location database at Family Search doesnt use the Swedish parish correct but something like this includes at least the country
    1. Gårdenstorp, Kila, Västra Götaland, Sweden
  5. Hèogalid should be Högalid
  6. Högalid is in Stockholm, Sweden ==> if we use the new validation
    1. Högalid, Stockholm, Sweden
  7. In the bio we have also character problems
    1. Fèodda Kila 1898-1920

      should be
       ==>
      Födda Kila 1898-1920

Question Can I use WikiTreeX to autocorrect some of those problems?

Autocorrect option goes through error reports.

Magnus,

For your case open this http://www.softdata.si/osebe_staro/ales/wikitree/Err_20170205/639_1900-1999_0.htm error report, search for Sjèokvist-6 and press button Correct.

You must also manually remove * from names.

Thanks it worked great Sj%C3%A8okvist-6

Comments on

  1. Would be nice to also be able to correct the LNAB even if you are not a Profile manager. It would save time same with error 911/912

As this is a profile with detected character problem and the name change should be automatic I feel it is safe that the software does this change or?

  2. The Bio text also needs character conversion

  3. The location lookup is not activated on the merge form
Changing profile ID is not an option for now.

I don't scan the bio for UTF errors. Maybe in the future.

<form action="https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:MergeEdit" method="POST" target="_edit">

Would be better to get a new tab target="_blank"

I can change that. It already opens in new frame, you just need to close it after edit.

BTW: can you come on chat.

I LOVE the new changes. Being able to edit the indexed information to more accurately reflect what is on the image is so critical. Thank you for making that available.

The very best part, in my opinion, is being able to edit the "Explain Changes" wording. Thank you so much for that.

I'd still like to see some changes to the "Facts" and "Sources" that get created in the bio section but functionality is more important right now.

Thanks, Debi!

We can definitely tweak the "fact" and source text. Are your suggestions for this somewhere already? If not maybe we should start a new G2G thread for collecting input.

My original comments on the extension are in an answer to the original introduction message. To recap from there:

SOURCES:

  1. Use Wikicode to create the italics around FamilySearch rather than the current HTML code for italics (i.e. <i></i>)
  2. For Ancestry sources, include the name of the person in the record and a link to the database. Both pieces of information can be found at the top of the screen where it says "John Doe in the U.S., Find A Grave Index, 1600s-Current"
  3. Revise the FindAGrave source to include the WikiTree's FindAGrave template at the end. That will provide a link directly to the memorial. For instance:

Find A Grave, database and images (http://findagrave.com : accessed 22 November 2016), memorial page for Lucile "Minnie" Taylor Wells (1872 - 1955) - {{FindAGrave|144108487}}

To look like this:

Find A Grave, database and images (http://findagrave.com : accessed 22 November 2016), memorial page for Lucile "Minnie" Taylor Wells (1872 - 1955) - Find A Grave Memorial# 144108487

FACTS:

  1. Add a header "== Research Notes ==" if it doesn't exist. Place extracted data in that section.
  2. Change the word "Facts" to "Data." Fact implies accuracy and only analysis will determine if the data is accurate.
  3. Extract ALL clues from the records. Use the word "Clues" for data which is not contemporaneous to the record being extracted (e.g. birth information and parents names in a death record)

Thanks for asking, Chris!

Thanks for this excellent tool - it has been a real help for me researching my wider family.

One question - the extension adds "facts" to the biography section and then adds the references as free text in the "references" section. Are there any plans to move to in-line citation so that it's easier to follow when multiple sources are added?

I haven't used the old version, but I just installed the extension and tried it out, and like it very much. It's a huge time-saver for adding sources. Big thanks!
