Hi WikiTreers!

Will you take a second and post here to tell the folks at RootsTech some of the things that you love about WikiTree?

Hi Roots Tech!!! My favorite feature of WikiTree is this, the "G2G questions and answers" forum. I was able to connect to the overall global family tree by enlisting help in breaking down my "roadblock".

The spelling of my last name was different when my grandfather's ancestors migrated to Canada and then the United States from France, which I had no idea. But by posting a request for help in finding parents of the person that caused my "roadblock", I learned what the issue was, and that I was on the wrong tack thinking my father's ancestors were from Ireland all this time.

This is a great tool to encourage collaboration and communication to help verify our facts and sources in order to maintain a well documented individual and global family tree. And finding my "cousins" was a definite bonus in all my research.

Simply put, collaboration that matters and tech that can keep up with it!

Hi RootsTech folks,

My favorite things about WikiTree are the friendliness and the opportunity to collaborate with others who care as much about accurate genealogy as I do.

Living in a rural setting, it's sometimes difficult to get together with people that "get me." Here at WikiTree, there's a real effort to accurately document the family relationships that are so important to us.

1.  Easy to use.  Once you get past the learning curve, it is much easier to use than any other tree (and I've used/use Ancestry, MyHeritage, Family Tree Maker, and FamilySearch.org trees).

2.  One profile for each person.  No duplication of efforts.  No 50 trees with the same person.  Just one profile for each person.

3.  Sources.  Wikitree requires you to use sources.  To add a fact, you have to be able to back it up.

4.  Collaboration.  We're all working together to make Wikitree useful.

5.  Connection.  During the last month, because of profiles I created, I've been able to connect cousins with each other.

6.  Projects.  The cemeterist project is my personal favorite, but projects give me a chance to collaborate with others on areas I'm interested in, or have expertise in.

7.  Responsive support.  In the forum, G2G, anyone can seek assistance; in fact, there's a system of Wikitree-ers who help each other.

8.  Responsive technology people. Someone mentions, "Gees, I wish we could do this," and next thing you know, we can.  New innovations such as Wikitree X, a Chrome app, make Wikitree amazing and indispensable.

Community, collaboration, chronicle (biography; story), chart (genealogical; one world tree), cousins.

There are other sites that have "One World Trees", and they have their pros and cons, but its the community and collaboration that make this one the best. And I love working on a single tree -- its much less work for me -- building on the work of others. And ultimately, we're all cousins anyway.

Plus, being able to write a story about my relatives and ancestors, to chronicle their journey and document their history. More than a memorial. This is unique to most other sites.

Hi

My ancestors were on the Atlantic coast, and I live on the Pacific.  The towns, courthouses, and  libraries are a long distance away, and my family's GEDCOM has not been easy to source.

I'm helping and receiving help as I learn to source and (hopefully!) connect ancestors on this huge tree.  Meanwhile, I'm learning the stories of my ancestors -- they were resourceful, stubborn, and dreamers.

Wiki's G-2-G helps make sense of the puzzles I'm putting together.  And maybe, just maybe, I can improve with practice.  -- Janine

I find the site to be user friendly, easy to research using the RootsSearch feature, the friendly atmosphere, the feeling that everyone is striving for one  common goal & the constant innovation implemented by Chris Whitten.

At WikiTree, I have learned an enormous amount about how to do excellent genealogy research in a very short time. Collaboration on profiles of common ancestors can be a great learning experience, because it is necessary to explain and defend our evidence-- and sometimes be corrected when another participant points out an error in our information. In my early days at WikiTree, when the interaction was with experienced and knowledgable genealogists with specialized knowledge that I didn't have, I benefited from their knowledge and gentle advice, and I was motivated to "elevate my game" -- to find the best possible sources and carefully document my evidence and reasoning. I never could have learned so much working on my own. And I enjoy "paying it forward" by helping other WikiTreers.
