Hi

Could you please assist with tracing William Henry Howard's parents and origin.  He was born in 1848 and married Jessie MacKintosh in New Zealand in 1866.  They had a daughter Frances Jessie Ward (nee Howard) to whom I am descended from.

Thanks very much

Sue ~

I see their marriage and a possible burial in NZ.  But everything else I see is England.  Do you know Jessie's origins?  Or could he have been from and spent time in England?

The cemetery inscription doesn't include the daughter.  So I'm not even sure if that is them.  Do you know when or where they died?
Hi Mary

Thanks for your feedback.  William Henry Howard was born 1848 - 1927 and his wife Jessie (nee MacKintosh) born 1836, died 1924, married in 1866 in NZ.  They died in Christchurch, New Zealand.  I presume both were born in England, which I am trying to trace.

They had a daughter Frances Jessie (nee Howard) Ward who was my great grandmother and died in Christchurch in 1963 aged 87.  She actually saw me a as a baby!  She was born 1876.  She was married to Frank Ward and had four children, the third to youngest was my grandfather, Bernard Stratford Howard Ward.

I don't know William Henry Howard's origins thats why I am trying to trace him as there was a rumour that we were related to the Duke of Norfolk's family.  I was wondering if his father was Charles Howard (which I am unsure about) who married Jane Watson (nee Felton)?

Any assistance would be appreciated as I don't know what ships they came out on and what their port of departure was?

Regards

Hi

Thanks so much for this information.  How can I trace further details about James Howard?

Regards

Susan, I'm not sure why you connected your question to this William Henry Howard.  He was born in Illinois in March of 1850, the son of Elikim Howard and Margaret Truesdale.  He married wife Mary, born in Illinois, in about 1877 and was still married to her in 1930, when he lived with his daughter's family in Chicago.

Are you sure the William Henry Howard, Howard-5650, that you connected your question to is the correct person?

Vic ~

I suspect she was searching Wikitree for matches and when she saw that this W. H. Howard wasn't hers, she used the ASK QUESTION link from his profile.

I often see this happen.

Susan ~

I believe I've found William Henry Howard in England with his parents.  It seems they are Charles Howard and Jane Watson (Chenoweth) Howard (I think their daughter married a Felton).  What bothered me about connecting them at first was that Charles Howard and Jane Watson Chenowith didn't marry until 1854 (after already having 3 children).  Also that Jane wasn't baptized until 1840.  So she may have been baptized when she was in her teens (this is all according to records I found on Ancestry).

I found William with them in the 1851 England census.  But because their marriage didn't take place until 1854.  I thought perhaps the Jane Ann Howard in the census might be a first wife to Charles and the actual mother of William (who may have died)  But I didn't find any records to support this, so she most likely is Williams mother.

I did find them on the passenger list going to New Zealand in 1859.  It matches with the 1851 census plus the birth of Williams sister Francis in 1854.  Also there are records for at least the five I mentioned in New Zealand cemetery records.

Charles' parents are James and Sarah Howard.  Jane Ann Watson's parents are Richard and Ann (Watson) Chenoweth (I think).

I am including the passenger list, 1851 census and marriage record here.  The other records are from Ancestry.  In the case you don't have access, I can provide them to you for their profiles.

Your're welcome, Sue!

All I saw at FamilySearch was what looks like James and Sarah's marriage record. I think they did have birth records for some of Charles' siblings. I will post that as well as their 1841 census and what I believe is his birth record from Ancestry (you may want to confirm).

By the way, I have a feeling this may be William's birth record.  It would be good if you could somehow get a look at it to confirm what I posted earlier about his mother.

"England and Wales Birth Registration Index, 1837-2008," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2N7T-D37 : 1 October 2014), William Henry Howard, 1848; from "England & Wales Births, 1837-2006," database, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : 2012); citing Birth Registration, Edmonton, Middlesex, England, citing General Register Office, Southport, England.
