Hi Doug,

As this wasn't tagged "projects" I didn't see it; I was on the road February 11 for 18 hours so I didn't do my usual G2G survey for posts that aren't tagged optimally.

The space page looks excellent. Have you gone through all the steps on the How to start a Project help page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Starting_a_Project ?

Top-level projects receive badges; would this fall under the German Roots project? I know there were a lot of geo-political changes in the area so am not sure.

I can set up a template, but we'll need to discuss it first; once you've read through the project help page and have covered those bases, go ahead and private message me and we'll figure out the details.

This is NOT a German project, it for the entire country of Austria, and its predecessor.  Why is Wiki so reluctant to provide Badges for new projects. I had this same response when the African-American project was created.

It looks like the person that used to create the badges left and no one now knows how to do it so they just deny any request!

Yes I'm looking through the starting a project page.

Thanks Doug
To clarify, the people who do the badges are still around.  And we don't just deny any and all requests.  But we don't make badges for every single project either. It is part of Abby's role on our team to make sure that projects are set up appropriately and either under the right top project or as a project on their own, depending on what's decided during discussion about the project set up.

It seems like you are at the discussion step so maybe it's a good time to private message Abby like she suggested and go from there. :)

I would prefer to have an open and public discussion of the subject.  So everyone can learn from this.

Yes I have read the discussion on creating new projects, SPECIFICALLY the idea that a leader has to run the project.  And that Leaders are nominated from among the "Super Stars" of our community.

The fact that even though I have contributed heavily to Wiki. I have made over 20,000 contributions, Entered over 4000 profiles all but 50 by hand, all with multiple sources.  Have helped numerous folks find and link to there ancestors.  Cleaned up many hundreds of screwed up Profiles, Sourced many hundred of profiles, Connected and Merged (properly) hundreds of profiles.

I have only received a modest acknowledgement AFTER I posted a complaint on my home page.

So I with your requirements I assume I will never become one of the chosen few.

If you sense a bit of bitterness, and frustration, your correct.  However I'm not doing this for recognition.  There is a need for the projects I have started here.  I do not care if I receive any recognition, (I would have left if that was the case)  I just want these projects set up AND on an EQUAL footing as all the other projects here on Wiki.

To allow projects (with badges)  for Mexico, Germany, United Kingdom, Irish-Roots, Scottish-Clans. Australia, Etc. (Just a quick look for other projects) seems unjustifiably unfair.

I will do whatever is needed to make the Austrian project work, I announced it here on Apr 2016, and received no comments from any of the Wiki "leaders." So just please state what else is needed, that I haven't done already. Other than asking your approval (which I did) and was politely denied.

There is no denial of your project, Doug. I think it is a great idea and very well set-up. There is a lot that goes into being a Leader-just being a stellar researcher and WikiTree user isn't enough. And, a project must have a Leader to be a top-level project because those badges can only be handed out by a Leader. I am sorry that it's frustrating, but there are a lot of things connected that depend on other things, and it's important that everyone go about things the way we've set up to keep chaos from happening, as well as disagreements. If you have a WikiTree Leader you work with regularly who'd be willing to lead the Austria project, we can talk about badges. For now, we need to wait.

Templates for projects all must use the project box format. I need a picture to get that started. If you want the template to apply a category, we need to discuss what category, whether it will be one broad one or if it will apply more specific ones by parameter, and what maintenance categories the project might be using so we can set those up.
From day one on Wiki I have never worked with a mentor or leader.  It took me about 6 weeks to figure out how to work with the system, yes I had a few questions and several folks provided help but I was pretty much on my own, and that's not a complaint, I just did not need a lot of help.

Now bear in mind, my frustration level is about maxed out, and I think I am keeping my cool about this.  There are no disagreements that can't be resolved with logic and common sense, its the only some says its that way because I said so.  Now with that said and yes I read what it takes to be a Wiki leader, how do I go about pushing toward that goal.
The best thing you can do is continue to be the best person and WikiTreer you can, Doug. The next step in the process is that you are nominated by other Leaders who think that your activity goes above and beyond what is expected of members. Part of how they do this is through awarding Super Stars.
Yes I Know that, but like I said I haven't worked with any Leaders here, Are you willing to work with me to finalize this project.

Thanks

Doug
Doug,

As far as finalizing the project, if you mean working on setting up the template and categories, yes. Leading to make it a top-level, no, I have too much at the moment to add another project. I would recommend looking at what other projects you have an interest in and start to work some Leaders. You may have one take an interest in the project and decide to help bump it to a top-level. There is plenty you can do without a badge.

If you mean working toward becoming a Leader, like I said, just continue to do your best around the Tree, always abiding by the Honor Code, and it will happen with time if the role fits.
