I have a great+ uncle James Stevens born in TN 1832, mom Rachael of VA

You said about 1836. Rachael had five listed in her Alabama household in 1850 census. She had at least one daughter not in the census named Jane, who married James Newman. She was born about 1820, in VA. Her James was born about 1832, according to the census. Here's the list from the census, if it helps:
