I poked around and didn't see one, if an ancestor was an avid gardener, fishermen, etc. might add a little depth.

Hi there Steve

Navigate to the Professions section of the categories.

You should find what you are looking for there

I will, I've been using that one a bit, didn't really think of a spare time hobby that way.
No worries! Also the Sports category may help (I don't know, depends on their interests)
Why not just describe it in the bio? What purpose does a category serve?
Because more often than not categories link to more information than what people can attribute to a profile accurately...
It's important to not imagine that the category can replace information in the biography.  A category can only supplement what's in the biography, it cannot replace it, because categories by themselves are unsourced information.  It's only in the biography that the profiler can state where the information came from, that the person was an avid gardener.

That then begs the second question:  once you have stated in the biography that the person was an avid gardener, and shown the source for this information, what additional genealogical purpose is served by grouping the person with other avid gardeners via a category?
I tend to agree with Jillaine on this one.  What purpose would this category serve?  If you wanted a category to state that a person was an avid gardener - in what possible genealogical sense would you need to know who on this earth had also been an avid gardener? (And then you are going to get into the discussion "how 'avid' is 'avid'?" LOL)
I thought "more information" was the purpose of free space pages. And categories serve to group profiles into topics of genealogical related interest so we can find connections likely to help our research.

And either way, not sure how either one would add more value than a mention in the bio to someone who was a gardener or fisherman.
I agree with Jillaine as well. You can see the merit of grouping military service into different categories so you can look at all WW1 vets or the like. But what value does grouping people of the same hobby together. I think categories are overused.
I agree its overkill
