My wife's great grandfather (from Germany) is quoted as saying "I didn't raise my  sons to be cannon fodder." Seems this is a pretty good reason, considering the conscriptions going on throughout the many German states before they consolidated.

Actually, many came for religious freedom. Many others came to what had been "sold" to them as land that was there for they and their families. Especially in England religious intolerance was rife. Europeans regarded owning their own land as "Heaven". Unfortunately, once here they began to have basically the same intolerance for other religious beliefs that they had experienced back "home". As to the land of milk and honey - well the people who "sold" them on this were the equivalent of Snake Oil Salesmen. Many did not do well and found that the fight to live on this land was not what they had planned on. Wonderful question!!!!
