I can't find Charlotte Reid's profile on WikiTree. Have you added her information on here? If so, could you provide a link?
Thanks Thomas for your interest and help. I am new to Wiki and wasn't sure how to add it. However I will try again now.

Hi Rosina. Have you looked yet on the Scotland's People website (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk) for Charlotte's death, probably between 1841 and 1851? I was going to check for you, but for some reason my login isn't working and I'll need to wait 3 days for them to get back to me. You'll need to register with the website. You have to pay to buy a record from there if you find one that you think might be right, but they have recently changed the site, and now, I think you can search and identify potential records for free. If Charlotte died before 1855 you will only be able to find a burial record, which sometimes don't have a lot of information on them. If she died from 1855 onwards, then the death certificates are very comprehensive with sufficient information for you to confirm it is definitely her. I checked on Ancestry, and none of the trees on there have Charlotte's death date.

Thanks Gillian but I can't see it on Scotland's People though I have tried all combinations of spellings. The death of her husband Alexander McNeil is not there either. I have certs for all 5 children from Scotland's People for the 1851 census where the family has been split up and living with different relatives, (mothers brother and sisters) in Ayrshire. When both girls married mid 1850's both Alexander and Charlotte are described as deceased. Find it strange that neither of the parents deaths are  recorded.
The burial records in Scotland are not particularly comprehensive. If she died after 1855 then the civil records are much more reliable. The only other option would be that she remarried, but given the age of the youngest children, it would be unlikely that they wouldn't be living with her and her new husband. Not impossible.. but unusual. Bad luck that the 1841 census doesn't give information like if she was a widow. At least that would narrow down Alexander's death.
