reading medieval script

Question

Hey, finally got frustrated, and found this for reading middle English and medieval script. I've been pretty good at it so far but honestly! A whole new world!  I love this stuff. What on earth did we do before Google?

It's always best going back to these documents. Sometimes you'll find abstracts in old books, but they can make inferences that aren't really there or leave out things that are useful. And it helps cut down on time spent in front of the TV ;)

I've found practice helps, I've transcribed a lot of wills in the last six months and I know that I really need to go back to the earlier attempts.

There is also a useful course on the National Archives with some really interesting documents to have a go at (letter from Princess Elizabeth to her sister Queen Mary begging for an audience because she thinks she is just about to be taken to the Tower is the first exercise)

I wish my father were alive today. He was a great English history buff. He read everything he could get his hands on about the Plantagenets and the Tudors. A few years before he died, we went with him to see one of the original copies of the Magna Carta when it came through our town.

I don't know that he could have adapted to the computer, but I certainly would have shared all this fascinating stuff with him.
