I think we've come up with a plan. We had a bit of a rough patch in determining what convention to use for Du Bois etc. The following guideline has been posted on the Category page for the New Netherland Settlers project
( http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Netherland_Settlers ) -
-
du Bois - for ancestors who remained in France
-
DuBois - generally, first few generations in America (until the name was anglicized to Dubois), with the following exceptions
-
Du Bois-1, 2, 10, 12, 13, 14, & 19
In France, and likely on arrival in America, the family probably would have written it ''du Bois'' (definitely with the cap "B"). However, we've decided to generally go with "du Bois" in France and "DuBois" in America for several generations, until the name was anglicized to "Dubois". For DuBois/Dubois questions, please coordinate with other profile managers before deciding & merging.
As I said, however, we didn't get to that conclusion right away. So several profiles were designated "project protected profiles" as Du Bois (both in France and America). Because so many profiles were merged into them, and so many of those had already had multiple merges - and also because there's really no "right" way (except for the cap "B" :) - we're keeping the Du Bois IDs for the exceptions listed above.
Hope this answers the question. If not, post a new question from whichever DuBois profile you're wondering about or any profile you think should be an exception. If you have objections to the actual guidelines, post here for discussion.
Thanks! Liz
