Does anyone have more information I can add to my Trotter/Ruthven Family connection? Thanks for helping

Hi, Donnie. Can you give a little more info or clarification? Was Trotter fighting with (for) the king (which king?) or was he in a fight with (against) the king (again, which king?)?

I'm trying to remember everything I was told they are soon family papers in a College in California I believe about Ruthven and the Trotter family but I have seen them on line now it has something to do with William Ruthven in the conspiracy abt his brothers killing the King they are remains of the Ruthven property that some family members says they seen I guess this was Scotland but I believe a Ruthven man changed his name to his wife's maiden name and came to Virginia.

I'm looking to see if I can find more about this now.

Thanks

The Ruthven connection comes from the time of Queen Mary of Scots..before Trotter became our name. Several things happened in that time that is easy to look up  The death of David Rizzio and Patrick Ruthven part in it..the same Patrick who threatened the life of King James before he was born and kidnapped him as a teen trying to take control of the nobles by controlling the king.  Then there was the Gowrie plot and the Ruthven name was banned from use under pain of death for about 40 years before a Ruthven begged for it and their property returned...during the years of banned use...a Ruthven married a woman named Doughty Trotter a "daughter of Trotter" and took her surname and thats how the Trotter name in this bloodline came to be

There is lots of information on the Ruthven family.  Alexander Ruthven and his brother John were murdered in Gowrie as they were accused of plotting the overthrow of James the vi.  This occured in Scotland. After that happened their name was proscribed or stricken from records and their estate seized.  That is when I believe the a Ruthven took the name of his wife - Trotter.  My ancestor also came to Virginia - same dates as yours and I am exploring the connection myself at this time.  Not sure which one - William?

Yes my set of Trotter Families ended up in Pickens and Anderson County,  South Carolina this area was Cherokee Land probably when they first moved to S.C. this area has been called Washington’s District and Pendleton District, i was contacted by another family connection when I first  became a member of Wikitree and he shared the information with me that I added to wikitree his brother had been to the Castle and had done some research, so share anything here on wikitree so we can maybe connect other family members, Thank you.

I took a 23andme  DNA test but my Trotter line is my Great Grandmother so my DNA may not be the same as the Male line. Lula Trotter married Andrew Fletcher Spearman here in Brushy Creek, Piedmont, Anderson County, Sputh Carolina in i believe the marriage date 1900 they buried at Shiloh United Methodist Church, Piedmont Anderson, SC my moms grandparents her dad was Ernest Dean Spearman married Ida Parker they buried same.
From what I can determine, there was a cousin also named Alexander Ruthven (1569 - 1621?) who was married to a Lady Trotter.  After the Gowrie Conspiracy in which brothers Alexander and John were killed by the King's men, who claimed that the brothers tried to kill the King, the great Ruthven name was tainted.  Thus, cousin Alexander, his wife, and his son James all assumed the wife's surname of Trotter and fled to England in 1602.

In my branch of Trotters, there was a descendant named James Trotter who moved to Virginia in the 1700s.  The frequency of Williams, Jameses, and Alexanders makes it very difficult to determine who was who!

Leslie-510 Andrew Leslie Earl of Rothes. 5th (1534-1611). I would also like to know if his set of Leslie came to America my family again the Trotter line married back to The Leslie line. This family even gets more interesting the more I look, Thanks

I guess we need to work all the Trotter lines that is why I want to know more about the Leslie line, the Trotter line in South Carolina married Griffin’s and also  Hutchison’s

My line is done but it is possible a mistake some where but I also have seen they are lots with the same names over the years, I will help anyway I can.. Thanks
