How many people on wikitree have a Cox/Cocke/etc. ancestor?

I've found it fascinating to see all the people who have a Cox tag on their profiles.  Admittedly, there are more than one Cox/Cocke/Coxe family in wikitree and many of them now are just plain Cox.   I was surprised by it all.

Not all of them have the same national origin either.

I don't know if all the tag lines at the bottom represent all the different Cocke/Cox lines in wikitree either.

I've just recently gotten back into researching my Cox line, and I am also fascinated by what I'm finding out from my reading some books on the Cox family.  I have yet to find out just who the first one in my line to live in America is, let alone just where they moved here from, but have discovered that there were many spellings including the ones you list above.  I've found Cock, Cook, Cooke, Koch, and even where someone had changed their name to Cole(s).  To top off all this, I also found from my reading there were several who had our last name who came to this country in several different areas, and that they then branched off and went all over the country which makes it confusing when trying to find your direct ancestors.

Brenda,

It sounds like you must be doing the Cox one name study?  I am doing the Fritz one name study and you can study anything to do with the name you like.  However, I have learned a lot about my Maiden name Fritz.  I have a few profiles named Cox as my husbands mothers maiden name is Cox and she knew no one beyond her grandfather and great-grandfather.

My maternal grandparents are Cox. I haven't been able to reliably follow my grandfather's line very far though. I think the ubiquity of the name makes it difficult to figure out which Coxs are yours.

My Paternal Grandfather is a Cox and I too can't seem to get too far. My family went to Utah and ended at 2 times great grandfather Meady Cox.I seem to be able to go pretty far on the Bates side if she is truly my ancestor. It is really hard to know.

My mother's maiden name is Cox. I have managed to trace the line back to

Thomas Cox

27 AUG 1626 • St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, Surrey, England

I have his parents names as Robert Cocke and Elizabeth Clifford but no further information.

My Paternal grandmother was a Cox. Part of her ancestors were from Kentucky, but I have not yet found the country of origin for my line.

My connection to the Cox family is through marriage and quite removed.  My mother's ggg aunt was Ruth Osborne who married Joshua McCowen Cox in 1784.  They lived in Virginia, but appeared to originally have come there from England, then Ireland, then Pennsylvania finally ending up in Virginia.  I have not confirmed all this yet (and have not added it to WikiTree because it has not been confirmed).  The information I have goes back to Richard Cox born in England in 1500, dying in 1581.  Anybody else familiar with this line?  Again, I haven't studied this line from Richard to Joshua yet.

Yes, I have been trying to find any info on the Reginald Cox family of Hamilton, Ontario. There was a son named Gordon for whom I cannot find a birth date or death date. I have used every search engine I can think of and have found absolutely nothing about his life.

My maiden name is Cox. I have a handwritten genealogy from my father that was written in the 1950s. It goes back to Jesse Cox, who died in Posey, IN in 1834. I think his parents were John Cox and Sarah Todd. But, I am not really sure of that. Any other Coxes on Wikitree from that line. I did connect with one cousin.

My name is William Cox. We also had a hand written family tree from the 1950s in our family that went back to a Jessie Cox in Indiana who would be my 3rd great grandfather. His son Thomas would lead a wagon train on the Oregon trail and open the first store in Salem Oregon
Hi Bill. Nice to connect. Are you going to connect Thomas Cox to wikitree? I haven't gotten that far on that line. Jesse Cox is my 5th great grandfather. just yesterday I was trying to find out what happened to his son by the same name. According to my handwritten geneology he died in 1845, but I can't find a primary source for that info.

I was born a Cox. I have gone back to William Coxe born abt 1584 in Bristol England. He immigrated to Barnstable, Mass. USA

After many generations in the US is Capt. John Cox, 1719-1789.  His first wife was Sarah Proctor, granddaughter to John Proctor who was hung in Salem as a witch. His second wife, Sarah Bodkin, is my ancestor. They immigrated to Nova Scotia after the expulsions of the Acadians and settled on a grant of land.

My dad is also a John Cox from Nova Scotia.

My Cox line goes back to Edward Cox of Pembroke, Massachusetts in the 1700s. There I have a brick wall, although some on FamilySearch think they have found Edward's parents.  Likewise, there is controversy surrounding Edward Cox's wife Rebekah and who her parents are.
