Tips on exporting, go to "Ancestry.com"; this is a FEE site isn't it?

Some links to Ancestry.com go to publicly available/viewable pages; for others you need to be registered; and for those links requiring registration, some simply require free registration (a login ID and pwd); others require a paid subscription.

Depending on the context of the link (and you didn't say where you found this), it may still be appropriate to link to a paid site if for no other reason than to let you know where it came from.

Ideally, though, we would replace such links with pointers to actual, more original source information.

Some links to Ancestry are pointing to original records. Sadly, a lot of them are just to tree records. But now that I have an Ancestry subscription I've started including links to records on Ancestry that I haven't found free anywhere (eg. I don't think the 1861 Canadian census is free anywhere online). I just put the link, what the record is, and then in parentheses (Ancestry subscription required).

Stealing the thread... An index (transcription) of the 1861 Census of Canada is available on familysearch.org; local genealogical societies have often made transcriptions for their own areas (usually pay per use)

There is also a transcription project in progress for Ontario records, hosted by OntarioGenWeb http://ontariocensus.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ While it is incomplete, I find the quality of the transcription is much higher than with family search.

Library and Archives Canada has indicated that the 1861 Census images are "Coming Soon" http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx At the same time LAC still had not posted the 1921 Census that was released to their custody in June.

FamilySearch has transcriptions, but you can't see the actual records! And it doesn't link households, so that means you can't even see who else was living with a person. Not very helpful! I'm excited for LAC to have it up, though! I like that site for censuses.

I completely forgot that the 1921 census came out this year!! Here I was thinking I still had to wait a while for that one! Now I'm gonna go look for anywhere that has at least the images...

If your question is in regard to the GEDCOM help pages here on wikitree (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/GEDCOM), yes, for the purpose of creating a tree and exporting a GEDCOM for it, ancestry.com IS a fee site. I believe that tip was included as ancestry.com is a popular site for searching, saving records, finding info, etc.

Going out on a limb here, it appears most of the GEDCOMs imported to wikitree originated as exports from ancestry.com. Probably the reason a specific "tip" for that process is included.

ancestry,com is a pay (fee) site.  It sometimes offers free times, but eventually after the trial period, you will have to pay to access any information on their site.
