My wiki ID is winterton-81. Ada is my great grandmother on my mothers side. I have located her death notice under Ada Annie Solomon Dunstan. According to this notice she was born in St Helena. I am trying to locate her parents. I recall my mother saying she was related to Saul Solomon, but I reach a dead end with Saul Solomon. I would like to find her birth notice as that would indicate the parents. I have had no luck on Familysearch, Ancestry, South African Archives. Could any of you fine people help? The death notice is on her profile.
Regards and thanks

With all due respect the death notice has Ada Annie Dunstan born Solomon. Her husband was John Dunstan. Her son, Percival named his firstborn Ada although she was known as Babs her whole life. Thank you for your interest and reply.

Thanks Wayne. Percival, John and Ada's son, had two brothers and a sister. They are Thomas, William and Emma. I have not yet found their children. It could well be that Thomas John is Percival's brother William's son. There are discrepancies in the spelling of Dunstan/Dunston as Percival was Dunstan with an a and Percival's father John was Dunstan with an o. I will check later today.
Thank you for your contribution.

Steve
Hi Wayne,

John Dunstan, father of Emma, Percival, Thomas and William was born 1860. Ada was born in 1865, William in 1900 and Thomas in 1893.  The Thomas John you refer therefore cannot be the son of William.

It has dawned on me why I cannot find any record of Ada's parents. This came to me after I found the 11/5/1862 - 12/5/1912 Diocese of St Helena, Parish of St James, Baptism register 7 which lists Ada Annie Solomon. She must have converted from Judaism to Christianity to marry John Dunstan. I would imagine that in those days it would result in excommunication from the rest of the family

Well quite the opposite of excommunication.
Saul Solomon (1775 - 1850) became ill and was put ashore on the Indian Ocean island of St. Helena. He became the leading merchant and ships purveyor on the island and an intimate of Napoleon during his years of exile there. His nephew, also Saul Solomon (d. 1892), was educated in Cape Town and became the government printer and a leading newspaper publisher. Although tiny in stature, he was an influential member of the Cape legislator and its most effective debater. He married a non-Jew and was baptized. Other members of the family, all Christians, played a prominent part in South African life, and included a chief justice and the South African high commissioner in London.
Well now, after eventually finding the actual St Helena baptism records it turns out that Ada Annie Soloman was baptised in 1870 at the age of 5. The parent is listed as Miriam Solomon,Spinster. This was witnessed by Henry R Soloman, Susan Solomon and Anne Knipe.
The plot certainly thickens. Miriam was born in 1808 and was 57 at the birth of Ada Annie in 1865.
Did she marry, adopt or have a child out of wedlock.
Enquiring minds wish to know.

I have an index to marriages on St Helena that mentions one Solomon. If you would like to send me an email address I'll send it on to you.
