What should we do about fictitious mothers?

+3 votes

This profile is just an example of a broader problem. The problem looks like this:

An FMG page like this one says something like "The name of Thuringbert's wife is not known."

On the WikiTree profile, we find a mother called something like "Chrotlinde Unknown." There are no sources for her, or for her marriage.

What should be done?

Really, I'm seeking your approval to put a blanket policy in place for EuroAristo, where we disconnect and put a note in the bio as follows "The name of Robert's mother is not known."

I agree with that policy. In the Acadian Project, if there's a popular theory for the parents, but no evidence, I'll link to them in the bio, but disconnect them from the profile.

My question is, for the totally fanciful ones, what do we do with those profiles? I hate the idea of them floating around disconnected. Like in the Acadian Project, there are tonnes of women named things like Unknown Mikmaq Woman, attached to various families, with no evidence. I'm thinking of merging them all together into a profile that contains a discussion about them or something.

That's an interesting idea , Lianne . Do you mean like on a Free Space page ? I have been disconnecting wrong wives /mothers too.

Last night , I had to go with an " Unknown Unknown"  ( using the http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLand as the source ) on a Wessex King's wife.

If I find sources for her , I will put her back in but here is my question :

Do I , in lack of sources, merge the fanciful names all into placeholder " UnKnown Unknowns" ?

Most of the supposed names  were " Princess " of a region or  the "MRS"  or " the wife of " .......

It couldn't be a free space page, because then profiles couldn't be merged into it. I hate having profiles named Unknown Unknown, but I think you're right that merging fanciful parents/spouses into that makes most sense.
I have no problem with removing ficticious/unknown parents, but let's, PLEASE, change the standard Disute Notice: ... The parents (or lack of parents) of the person described in this profile ...."  The Notice should state that, for such and such reason, no mother is shown.
