Not much info known about James, other than he was married to Mahala ? and is buried in Whitley County, KY near Williamsburg.  I'm attempting to trace his parents and even further back if possible.

LDS Family Tree has James Sumner's birthplace as North Carolina rather than Virginia. It shows his death place as 1834 in Whitley, Kentucky.
Any chance he had a brother named Samuel Sumner b. abt. 1786 in NC?

You gotten a chance to check out http://Record of the Descendants of William Sumner, of Dorchester, Mass., 1636 yet? Quite a few James in there, but it's worth a look if you have time to see if you can get lucky.

Thanks Tracy. I will look into this. We have corresponded before, right? I am clueless as to any parents and/or siblings for my Samuel Sumner b. abt. 1786 NC. I do not know his birth county in NC, so have not done well with an NC Archives search. My Samuel's oldest son was Joseph John Sumner, but the trees online with that patriarch seem to be unrelated. BTW, that link does not seem to work.
