I was looking for relevant military related categories for British regiments in the 1800s but those already set up seem to relate to modern military terms not those used back then. My ancestor was in the British 58th Regiment and came over from what was then Great Britain on a convict ship and was then garrisoned for short time in Sydney before the regiment was required to deploy to New Zealand as there were disputes between colonials and the Maori over land. This is sometimes referred to as the "Maori Land Wars" but since it is still a tetchy subject it is not such a prominent historical event as say NZs participation in WWI. Is it appropriate to create at least two new categories for "British 58th Regiment" and "NZ Maori Land Wars"? Potentially a third category could also be created because after leaving the 58th he later joined the "NZ 1st Waikato Militia".

Refer to my ancestors profile page for full details - I have already added two categories from the list for NZ Pioneer and NZ Medal as he was awarded a medal for his militia service.

there is an overall Category: New Zealand Wars, using a more recent term (for Europeans in 1960) for what was called the Māori warsfrom this page there are many free space pages about conflicts that make up this category.

there are already some categories for individual events as is appears they took place over a period of time...  using the ones listed on Wikipedia, I see e have created on wikitree:

1843 Category: Wairau Affray

1845-1846 Category: Flagstaff War

1846 Category: Hutt Valley Campaign

1846-1858 Category: Wanganui Campaign

1860-1861 Category: First Taranaki War

1863-1866 Category: Second Taranaki War

1863-1864 Category: Invasion of Waikato

1865-1868 Category: East Cape War

1868-1869 Category: Titokowaru's War

1868-1872 Category: Te Kooti's War

it looks like the 58th (as shown in the other answer) was in New Zealand from 1845-1859 (Wikipedia)

also saw references to 1st thru 4th Regiments of the Waikato Militia, so eventually they all should be created, but the correct name and placement of them would have to be determined.

In the 1880's, the British army re-organized their infantry.  They combined two regiments into one new one.  They did away with numbered regiments and gave them names of towns or territories.

The Northamptonshire Regiment was formed as part of the reorganisation of the infantry when the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot (raised in 1741) and the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot (raised in 1755) were redesignated as the 1st and 2nd battalions of the Northamptonshire Regiment, with the regimental depot at Northampton.

So you might consider making a link to the consolidated regiment: the Northamptonshire Regiment.

Thanks for the suggestion - he was discharged from the 58th Regiment in 1849 before the name change - not sure if I should add the latter name in the circumstances?
I thought that might be the case but I still think that would be legitimate to make the connection to the Northamptonshire Regiment.
