Dorothy, maiden name unknown, was married to this Hugh Barlow. He died, then Dorothy married in March, 1684, my 7th great grandfather, James Farlee, Sr.,

who made his will in 1727, in Chowan County, North Carolina

Thanks for ANY help to locate Dorothy's maiden name. She is my 7th great grandmother!

Well - this is not much help, but here's another researcher's information.

Unfortunately, he too was unable to find a maiden name for Dorothy.

Based on what we know, does it appear that she and Hugh were married prior to their immigration? If we assume she was born 1664-1665, then by 1682, she was 18 years old. Presuming she could be married by 16-ish, the earliest she might have been married would be 1680.

Since Hugh did not arrive until (the latest date) 1679, we'll presume they were married in the new world. presumably North Carolina. Likely Abermarle County. Between 1680 and 1683. Since she was a widow and appears to have had no children with Hugh, we can assume it was a short marriage. This makes it more likely she married around 18-ish, or 1682-1683 and he passed away within the first year of their marriage, or thereabouts.

In the will, does it appear to specify any children that might have been adopted by James Farlee? It might be hard to tell, if he had them take on his last name. Plus it appears he had a first marriage too, so it makes it even harder to spot a child born just before they were married in 1684.

I'm just trying to think of any way possible to find records that might be associated with James, Dorothy, and Hugh. Marriages and children were some of the better ones of that period, and wills and land deeds. I'd think if we can find some of these, it might help to narrow down her last name. I've also found that these were awfully small communities. Usually you married the neighbor from the farm down the road. So if we can find out who his neighbors were, check to see if they had any daughters named Dorothy around the same age, we might just run into a bit of luck.

Thanks, Scott! In James Farlee, Sr.'s will, he mentioned a child of Sarah Bentley, as an heir. Since James married
Dorothy in March, 1684, and elsewhere, it gives his age as born in about 1645, he was already, nearly 40 years
old. I believe this marriage was most likely his second marriage. The Sarah Bentley, I believe, was a daughter of his by his first wife, whose name is unknown. The other
details you have posted, seem to fit. Thanks for your help!
