Either there is a misprint in the date and it should read 1657 or he does not belong in this Alexander Rankin's family.  The other thing that comes to mind is he would be William Rankin.  William Bass unless born out of wedlock to Alexander and a Bass, or raised by/adopted in to the family, would have no place in this profile.  If William was raised by or adopted into the family, It would be best treated in the Bio.  Unless you can Identify William to Alexander, I would remove him from the linage.

Son did not take father's name? Or could William Bass in 1857 be later generation named after son you are looking for?

This is obviously a mistake - adding William Bass as a son of Alexander Rankin.

These profiles ( from Scotland) are up for adoption if anyone would like to fix them !
