Best practice for multiple merges in 1700's profiles

+5 votes

Hi, I need a game plan: logically, what is the ideal way to help with three profiles of Samuel Barber.  This is 1700's in Windsor, Connecticut, and each profile helps shape the picture.

Samuel Barber   Barber-2956 Samuel m(1) Ann (Gillette) Barber.  Gillette-199; he m(2) Comfort Merriman Merriman-495.

I've discovered a second profile for Samuel Barber-4236 and one or two Comfort Merriman’s (It may be mother and child.)

There's a 3rd profile for Samuel Barber, Joseph's son Barber-3078

How to proceed?

  1.  request a merge of Barber-2956 and Barber-4236.
  2. Source and (most likely) connect the Comfort Merriman?
  4. Comfort:  Profile for Merriman-495
  5. Comfort Merriman
  6. Born 1720 [location unknown]
  7. Daughter of [father unknown] and [mother unknown]
  8. [sibling(s) unknown]
  9. Wife of Samuel Barber — married 14 Aug 1738 in Harwinton, Connecticutmap
  10. Mother of Prudence (Barber) Preston
  11. Died 1801 [location unknown]

4236 should not be merged. Dates and places are different.
3078 and 2956 match perfectly.

A good way to start is always with sources. What can you prove? This sort of thing also needs a basic bio. It is not sufficient to slap on a few sources and expect people to be able to see they are the same.

I've added some notes to -4236. The changes tab indicates he was certainly meant to be the husband of Comfort and father of their children. But he has the wrong birth date, because the Samuel b. in 1722 died in a few days.

I also added a birth source to -3078.

What you need is marriage records to Comfort Merriman and Ann Gillett. Or you need his children's birth records to say Samuel and Ann and/or Samuel and Comfort.  A will could be helpful
