Could someone add the link to the free-space profile index to the Free Space Profile help page?

I.e., add the link http://www.wikitree.com/indexes/space.html to Free Space Profile help page?

Maybe add some verbage about checking for page names and titles before one names and titles (<-- not a verb) their new one?

EDIT - Merriam-Webster says "title" can be used as a verb. Who knew?!

I always find it by going to the SITEMAP for WikiTree

Hi Bruce,

I see that your question was inspired by this other one: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/37078/need-watch-for-duplicates-when-creating-free-space-profiles

I'm not so sure watching out for duplicates is necessary.

If someone does want to look for duplicates, using that index would be painful, wouldn't it? A search, using the text search at the bottom of http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:SearchPerson would be easier. And if duplicates did become common, we could do an automatic search like we do with person profiles.

You're correct about the primary inspiration for the question - besides multiple attempts to find it myself. And, yes, it's on the Sitemap page but who would think to look there? wink

With regard to watching out for duplicates - the person posting the question got some answers so... [shrug]

With regard to searching being more difficult one way or the other - it depends. If one uses the Google search for say "barkley family list" (one of mine), the results are horrendous! If one searches for "space barkley family list", it's the first hit.

Chris, I seriously doubt very many wikitree members would think of that, unless you add that as a hint for searching for free-space profiles.

Looking through the index may take a couple of tries to find the right range of names, and then it's useful only if the profile creator gave the page name and title some thought. Mixed results.

I understand that the wikitree crew has plenty to do. But, if someone has 5 minutes sometime, it seems like a reasonable change, and provides a link appropriate for the subject, it doesn't appear it would do any harm, and it may make it easier for someone looking for free-space profiles.

EDIT - In addition to the paragraph above - seems like it would take a shorter amount of time to add a link to a help page than (perhaps, eventually) to code, test and debug an automatic search.

I added a sentence with a link under "Creating Free-Space Profiles" on the page you suggested. Cheers, Liz

I will say this much for the index... It's a good way to see how NOT to title a page!

Your last comment -->yes

Your answer - where did add that? Could you be specific, please. Couldn't find what you may be referring to.

I had a thought:

If all Free Space profiles were categorized as Free_Space_Profiles, that would create a much better "index" of free space profiles than THIS does.

I tried to see if there was already such a category, but I couldn't figure out how to generate a list of categories...

Is this what you mean?  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:Categories

I wish there was a word search option for this list.  I was lookingfor the new Witches category and didn't see it becauseit was listed under Accused.  Would be nice to search the categories by likely words in the title rather than browsing through a few thousand titles.   Maybe there is a way to do this search already and I just don't know about it?

We don't have a category search tool.

I think the key is cross-categorization and sub-categorization. Then you can drill up and down more easily.
Kitty, yeah, I guess that is what I mean; ugh. Never mind. That's horrible.

This is one reason I don't use Categories; it's just not easy to find things.

And one could argue that some thought should be put into how Categories are named such that they come up appropriate in search results, but that someone won't be me. ;-)

This is a response to Chris' note on 8/21 because I wonder if others might find a search option helpful for categories and/or Free Space "things".

Chris, Can a search option be added?  Something like the search window on G2G would be great!  I use that search daily and I would love to be able to search the categories and free space profiles in a similar way.  I always have trouble finding "Kitty's Library" because I can't search for it like a profile name. Drilling would not have helped me find a Witches category under A for Accused, but a word search tool would have saved me a lot of time in that one quest.    Thanks, Chris.  Let's see if anyone else might find a search helpful.  Of course, I don't know if such could be implemented.

Or is there a Google search workaround that might work?
