The US Civil War: War Between the States project is dedicated to those individuals who participated in this conflict in whatever capacity, whether a soldier, spy, or even those who supplied either side during the conflict. It is not necessary that you have an ancestor who fits this description. If you have an interest in this part of American history, you are more than welcome to participate.

Just post a reply below and I will gladly add you to the project. Go to the project page (link below) and see what else you can do to become a member of our project!

I am interested in this project.
I just awarded your badge!!
I'm also interested in this project. I have ancestors who fought for the North; my husband had ancestors in the Union and the Confederate armies.

I do not want to join the project. However, I do run across young men from New England who died in the South during the war. That's lately, doing CT cemetery work. As you can imagine, there's plenty of Civil War officers with counties named after them. I wouldn't mind adding a project tag when I come across them, in case other project members want to follow-up.

I just added to a profile. (I'm descended from his wife's sister.) Darned if it didn't work! Except I don't know what to do about the "side" being blank. I put USA just like the project page says to do.

the "side" issue is from the way the project box template, which is called by US Civil War, was changed, and it broke evaluation of that element.

project members are in the process of updating the templates to get them working as desired again, in the meantime, ignore the way that looks, when we fix the template, it will display properly without you having to do anything
Yes, I am interested in the Civil War! My great grandfather, Daniel Augustus GEIGER, was a member of the 128th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and was in the Cornfield at Antietam and was captured at Chancellorsville and was exchanged after 10 days in Richmond. He later enlisted as a "Replacement" for the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment and was again captured on June 21, 1864, at Tunstall Station, VA. He was a POW at Belle Isle in Richmond, then sent to Andersonville, GA and then to Florence, SC before being returned to a Hospital in Annapolis, MD. His brother, Franklin GEIGER, was a member of Company K, 151st PA Infantry and was KIA at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863.
Interested in this project because of multiple family members who participated in various capacities during this period. Let me know how I can better help in this project!
I am interested in this project.  Have ancestors from both sides.
Done! Welcome!!
Sorry! I must have missed the email - didn't mean to make you wait!! Welcome to the Civil War project!!
I am interested in joining the Civil War project.  I have identified several great grandfathers and great uncles who participated in the Civil War - mostly on the side of the CSA and mostly at Fort Fisher, NC.
I have currently identified two ancestors who fought in the civil war and would like to be able to add them to the project. Thank you!
Today in history, July 3rd 1863, the Vermont 16th regiment attached to the 1st Corp was instrumental in stopping Picket's charge,

See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Arms-72
As a southern boy with more than a few ancestors in the Army of Northern Virginia, I would be honored if you allow me to participate.  I know I'm a tad bit late, but what do you expect with cavalry.
I am interested in this project. Thanks
I am interested in this project.  I have ancestors that fought on both sides of the conflict.  Thank you!
I've created a Data Base of all US Navy and Marines and all Confederate Navy and Marines. I have over 145,000 entries.
Just a reminder to check out our project page to see what else to do after you get the Civil War badge. You will want to add the tag, join the Google group and consider contributing to one of the state resource pages if that is your interest. If you need any help, just let us know!!
Since our statues are being removed, this may be an excellent way of preserving the history that so many have misinterpreted. I am proud of my Confederate ancestors. I am proud of my Union ancestors....and they wound up intermarrying with each other. Both sides believed deeply that their cause was just and right. You can not fault a man for doing what he fully believes is right. Btw, none of my soldier ancestors owned slaves. I am proud of my Revolutionary War ancestors, my ancestors who fought in the War of 1812 and Indian Wars, and especially proud of my Daddy who was an underage WWII soldier.
I have done extensive research in three Civil War regiments from Pennsylvania. The 128th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment, the 151st Pennsylvania Regiment, and the 44th Pennsylvania Volunteers, which was also known as the First Pennsylvania Cavalry. I will gladly share information on these units.
Thanks for your contributions and your offer to share your research!
I developed and maintain a data base that includes the USN, USMC, CSN and CSMC. I have almost 150,000 files/names. It is actually two separate data bases. The small one is under 2,000 and is every ship and station, while the larger one (150,000) are the individuals who manned those ships or stations. So if a sailor had been on 10 different ships/stations, then I have 10 entries. So that is why I have more entries than people who served. The Navies did not list a man's date of birth, only how old they were upon enlistment.
WOW< That is awesome  thank  you   for that information. Will be checking it out soon. Again

Thank you
Yes, I'm interested,  I have several family members involved as Union soldiers in the war.
I am interested in the project as I have at least one person who fought in the American Civil War:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Felker-208
Count me in! I just filled out my application for the DOC My family fought on every single branch. I'm working on a project now to reconstruct pieces of my family's line through their civil war enlistment records who have been lost. The war completely decimated my father's paternal family in Virginia.
Let me know the names if anyone was in the navy. I have copies of the Union naval enlistments and I have copies of Confederate ship rosters.
I am and have quite a few kin that served in Civil War.Mostly confederates.I even have heard of 1 man who died at battle of Perryville.
I believe I have signed up for this and would love a project or to assist someone.
Thanks, Barbara! You can find a list of things to do on the project page. Also, if you are interested in a particular state, many of our state resource pages could use some work.  Please let me know if you need any help!
My maternal great-great grandfather was at Appommattox when Lee surrendered to Grant. One of my cousins had his actual pardon papers.
Hello. I have an ancestor who fought in the war. I'm still at the very start of this massive research of the family tree. So, here I am.
Yes! Please add me to this project. I'm certain of one connection but I think I have two more.
Hello everyone! I'm working on identifying, humanizing and honoring all 1,000 of the black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts, the first all-black regiment before the USCT was formed. I would love to join this project! Please note I'm SUPER NEW to WikiTree and still learning the ropes and figuring out how we communicate with each other, organize things, etc. I'm probably a wealth of opportunity for corrections and feedback right now ;)

I had started a project space for my project, but I'm not 100% sure it's the right type of project (I haven't formatted my TO DO areas yet since I've been focusing on doing instead, but will get to it if anyone else takes an interest. Kind of treating it as my own personal organized mess at the moment.)

It's here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:54th_Massachusetts_Volunteer_Infantry

Well met!
-kim.
Thanks! I have added your space project to the Civil War Project. Welcome!!
I'm a Walt Whitman fan which puts me squarely in the middle of Civil War interests. And did you know Whitman apparently saluted Lincoln almost daily from just outside the White House? Count me in.
I did not know that! Welcome!!
Thanks Paula! YES I am passionately interested in the War between the States!

And should you (or any Wikitreers) want to pursue "Whitman and the Civil War," the University of Iowa offers a great, free online course in the subject...should be coming around again in the near future...I highly recommend it!

Free, interactive dedicated students, online, absolutely wonderful professors give the lectures...did I mention that its free?
Thanks! That is wonderful to know. I will watch for it! I am quite interested!!
I’d like to earn the Civil War project badge so I can add categories to some of my profiles. Thank you!

Mandy
Mandy

you do not have to be a project member to add categories, stickers, bio, sources, etc to a profile
I am currently working on adding cemetery names in Lycoming County Pennsylvania and have a lot of military across the board so I wanted to join to ensure that I am adding the proper templates/ categories. I also saw that there are tons of new template names that need to be switched, I'd be happy to help fix with some guidance on the regiment parts (category specific). Once I have my ancestry account back up and running I will be able to get some research on unknown regiment placements as well.
varies slightly for each sticker.. instructions are on the sticker page.

for {{US Civil War}}

|regiment name=  is free text and shows up on the sticker display, list the units assigned to, can be more specific than a category is made for (company, battalion) or higher/parent (brigade, division, army), or multiple (1st Infantry; 147 Infantry)

|unit= is for the first unit served in, used to create/assign to a category, with ", United States Civil War" being added by the sticker.

Existing unit categories are listed in the various state categories, so for Illinois units, look in [[Category: Illinois, United States Civil War]]

Starting place for all wars to find existing unit categories start in [[Category: <country>, <war>]], if that does not show up, start in [[Country: <war>]], if sub structure does not exist a profile can be added there until that war is worked on
Christine, that's great! I've been building free space pages for African American Civil War soldiers by county; I've got Chester and Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, but not Lycoming yet. If I get one started for Lycoming, I'll reach out / invite you! :) Please feel free to do the same; I'm working on soldiers from the 54th Massachusetts regiment, many of whom enlisted from Pennsylvania.
Thanks for the tip. I spent the night looking and playing around to make sure I got it right on one of my pages.
Please add me to the U. S. Civil War Project. I have ancestors who served the Confederacy during this conflict.
Hi, Please add me to the project. I have several family members that served in that war. I have found lots of info on the subject about them..And would like to share and help.
Thanks Paula,

According to civil war records, my wife's 2nd great grandfather William Blydenburgh  4/20/1834 - 2/13/1925 joined up in New York on 5/18/1861.

I want to join! My GG Grandfather fought on the Union side

William LaRoe LaRoe-182

I would like to assist with the Civil War Project. So far, I have found 8 G-GGG grandfathers who served the Union in various units in Kentucky and Indiana Regiments. One was killed at Vicksburg in 1863, another died in Castle Pickney, a Confederate prison camp in Charleston, SC, in 1864.
Hello

I would like to join the civil war project as my 3rd great grandpa John Charles Gibbs was in the 106th New York infantry company H and was wounded at Monocacy. I also have a 2nd great grandpa Joseph simpier who was in the civil war also and took the place of a wealthy man. I am very interested in this project. Thank you
I haveun p obsess upward of 50 Civil War veterans in my extended family tree in Virginia and North Carolina...I would like to be added to this project if I may ☺
I would like to join the Civil War Project. My Sylvester Brown Stephenson fought with Ward's Alabama light Artillery and his brother James Harvey Stephenson fought with 6th Regiment,James Wheeler's Tennessee Cavalry. Both fought on the Confederate side.
I feel the same way! Even though I have many relations on both sides of my family who served in the Confederate Army, my mother was actually raised (by her Southern father and immigrant mother) in a northern state, and she identifies strongly with the Union cause ☺ On my father's side, a set of no less than 9 Mabry brothers, alomg with their family, fought in Lee's Army! Dirlrect ancestors,
Please add me to the Civil War Project.  My GGG Grandfather was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga.
Hi,

My Mother has always said that we had men in the Civil War on both sides. I am trying to track them.   One my Grandmother mentioned in a letter is Horace Searcy.  But I can't find him on any Civil War records.  He was in the Union Army - captured and put into Andersonville Prison.   He did get out but died shortly after from the effects of the prison.   I don't know which family member served on the Confederate side.  I hope to find him too.

Sally Cervi Davis
There is a good book on the Andersonville Prison that was published a number of years ago. I can't remember the author but it would be worth checking out for information on your Searcy ancestor.

Mary Ellen Alvis
Interestingly, I have just learned of a deceased cousin relation who married a Searcy, but in Virginia. I haven't been able to find an obit or grave site yet to add her profile. She was a Creasy from Virginia. Possible lead on your relative? I can try exploring that line for you once I get some traction
I would like to join. I have 7 ancestors who fought on the Confederate side in the war. One was killed in action and two were injured.
I would like to be added to the project I have several officers of the War on the paternal and maternal side of my family. I have recently found officers in my husband's lineage.
I would love to join the group. During my genealogical research I found that I have two grandfathers that fought against each other in the same Civil War battle. I am digging into this now and have become fascinated with the conflict.
I'm another one that would love to join the group. My 3rd Great Grandfather fought at Gettysburg with the 5th Maine Battery. I have also found a lot of uncles and cousins that fought on both sides and many that died during battles.
Thanks and I'd also like to participate.
I would like to be added to this project, I have family members that were involved with the civil war. The season's have passed many times over, but you are not forgotten!

Welcome to all our new members!! Please request to be added to the Google Group as well as the Google Group for Military and War since this is a sub of that project.

I am updating project pages. One problem we had with the Civil War Page is that it was too long (which results in a warning when you save). I have moved the Member Participation section to a separate space page. Please be sure to add your name and what you are working on or are interested in on this new space page:

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:US_Civil_War_Project_Progress_Page&public=1

Thanks!!!

Please add me,Thanks!
Please add me and I'll help when I can.

I, too, have an Andersonville survivor. No Confederates have fallen from the tree yet.

I am interested.  I just finished doing a freespace profile on 6 Hemrick brothers who all fought in the war.  [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Six_hemrick_brothers_in_1895]
by Lynn Hemrick G2G6 Mach 2 (20.2k points)
Great! I added the badge to your page!
I searched my data base and could not find any Hemrick in either Navy.
The six Hemrick brothers were infantry in the Civil War.  No Navy.

Yes, please sign me up. I have no direct ancestors who fought on either said but one may have been a local provost marshal for the Confederacy and another was a contract assistant surgeon with the Army of Northern Virginia.  Also I wrote a portion of a history of Fairfax County, Virginia, (published in 1978) that included the Civil War.

I have not added a resource page, but I have been adding short descriptions and resource links to some of the units and also connected them to engagement categories. I have only add one free space profile: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Company_I%2C_39th_Regiment_New_Jersey_Volunteer_Infantry , and was able to add a few related profiles, but have a lot more to do. I do not think I will ever be able to identify any of the deserters.

That is extremely helpful!  I have added a little to some of the units but there are so many!!

Paula,

I'm already part of the project. Also, I'm the Coordinator for Massachusetts in the US History Project. Since I'm already working on some FSP's for Massachusetts, I'll add one for a resource page for the Civil War. I'll let you know when it's ready.

Bob
by Bob Keniston G2G6 Pilot (263k points)
We have a space page for resources for each state by county. Don't know if that one is finished. You can connect to your history project if you would like and of course please add your page to the Civil War project! Thanks!!
There isn't a page listed for Massachusetts, so I'll go ahead and create one. I'll use the same format as the other states.
Bob,

[[Space:Massachusetts Resource Page US Civil War: War Between the States]] is there, the link from it to [[Category: United States of America, United States Civil War]] had a typo so it did not show up on the page with all the other state resource pages...

i fixed the typo so you should see it now,
Keith, Found the page last night. Thanks for the fix. I found another "bad" category for the link to units. The title had changed and is now fixed. I'm getting ready to add some information.

Please sign me up. I'm a member of UDC (application based on my 4th great-uncle, Robert Edward Lee) and have tons of Civil War soldiers in my tree.  I've also been working on the May/June Military Challenge and have sourced several profiles of Civil War soldiers and added the War Between the States template to them for that as part of the challenge. Thank you!

I have several civil war veterans - the one I've done the most with being Paul Popwell (Popwell-30), in Clinch's 4th Ga Cavalry, the Wayne Rangers under Wiggans.

I don't know if anyone's done any searching there, but there's a cemetery in Waynesville, Georgia devoted specifically to Confederate soldiers - all of which appear to be members of Clinch's Cavalry.

Welcome to all of you! Make sure you check out the project page, add the tag and sign up for the Google Group. Instructions for all of that are on the project page!

Paula when you click on the link to this line:

* Check out our US Military Categories maintenance categories for our project needs, then jump in and start helping!      The page says Pending.

When I click on the link for an example profile it just takes me to the WikiTree Family Tree Page but not to a specific profile.

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong!

I did update with many Civil War sources profile for my Great Grandfather Gottfried Gebhardt  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gebhardt-285
When I click on it I get the page right away. Do you have a Google account? Are you signed in? I don't think that makes a difference. Let me see if I can get your email and add you.
I can't do it from my phone. I asked someone else to. If they don't get you added I can do it tomorrow morning.
I have an account for other wikitree groups so yes I should have one.

my direct email is rlboz at sign att dot net  (think you can figure that out)

Not sure if I was doing something wrong or the link is just not linking....
I am not a manager of that group but have requested that the person who is add you.  We should allow a few days for the holiday but she is usually quick.
Thanks!  I appreciate it!
I apologize that I thought you meant the google group.  I see that you meant maintenance categories. I was not aware of that page. I'll check it out but I don't recall setting up maintenance categories for Civil War. Our lists of things to do are on the project page. Thanks!
Okay I see where you clicked that. Those boxes are being added (not by the project) and I had no idea there was one on our project page. I've seen them other places. They contain many mistakes. I'll fix it. To date, we don't have maintenance categories. Also, Military and War does not use the example profiles listed in these boxes. We use the ones from Military Showcase Profiels.
