The US Civil War: War Between the States project is dedicated to those individuals who participated in this conflict in whatever capacity, whether a soldier, spy, or even those who supplied either side during the conflict. It is not necessary that you have an ancestor who fits this description. If you have an interest in this part of American history, you are more than welcome to participate.

Just post a reply below and I will gladly add you to the project. Go to the project page (link below) and see what else you can do to become a member of our project!

Please add me to the Civil War Project.  My GGG Grandfather was wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga.
Hi,

My Mother has always said that we had men in the Civil War on both sides. I am trying to track them.   One my Grandmother mentioned in a letter is Horace Searcy.  But I can't find him on any Civil War records.  He was in the Union Army - captured and put into Andersonville Prison.   He did get out but died shortly after from the effects of the prison.   I don't know which family member served on the Confederate side.  I hope to find him too.

Sally Cervi Davis
There is a good book on the Andersonville Prison that was published a number of years ago. I can't remember the author but it would be worth checking out for information on your Searcy ancestor.

Mary Ellen Alvis
Interestingly, I have just learned of a deceased cousin relation who married a Searcy, but in Virginia. I haven't been able to find an obit or grave site yet to add her profile. She was a Creasy from Virginia. Possible lead on your relative? I can try exploring that line for you once I get some traction
I would like to join. I have 7 ancestors who fought on the Confederate side in the war. One was killed in action and two were injured.
I would like to be added to the project I have several officers of the War on the paternal and maternal side of my family. I have recently found officers in my husband's lineage.
I would love to join the group. During my genealogical research I found that I have two grandfathers that fought against each other in the same Civil War battle. I am digging into this now and have become fascinated with the conflict.
I'm another one that would love to join the group. My 3rd Great Grandfather fought at Gettysburg with the 5th Maine Battery. I have also found a lot of uncles and cousins that fought on both sides and many that died during battles.
Thanks and I'd also like to participate.
I would like to be added to this project, I have family members that were involved with the civil war. The season's have passed many times over, but you are not forgotten!

I have many relatives who fought in this war, both north and south.  My southern ties are via the Shenandoah Valley, my northern ties got the whole way into NY.   I would like to be able to learn more.

Yes, please sign me up!  My 2nd Great Grandfather served in Company A of the 16th Maine Regiment.  Their regiment was essentially sacrificed on the first day of Gettysburg and told to hold the line against Lee's approaching Confederate Army "at any cost" so that the Union Army could pull back and regroup.  He survived, many did not with only 38 of the 275 escaping death or capture.  Those captured tore up their flag and stashed the fragments in their uniforms so their "Colors" would never be captured.  He was captured and spent time in Libby Prison.  I have his personal letters from the war I would be happy to share and love working on all aspects of Civil War research.

I would love to join your project. I have studied our local history within The Civil War and have found several of my ancestors who were in The Battle of Murfreesboro as well as my 2x Ggrandfather James M Cass fought with the Twenty-fifth regiment of Tennessee infantry under the late Gen. George G. Dibrell, s wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro. His regiment took part in the many engagements of the war between the states and he escorted President Jefferson Davis with all Confederate Archives to Washington; Ga. where he then surrendered to Union forces.

I would like to join your project. I am currently researching the involvement of my GG grandfather James M Cass and his brother Lewis Cass.

James Cass obituary reads;  "Rites held for Vet, James M. Cass Funeral Services for Mr. Cass, 91, Civil War veteran who fought with the Twenty-fifth regiment of Tennessee infantry under the late Gen. George G. Dibrell, were held yesterday at Old Zion church in White County. Mr. Cass was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro. His regiment took part in the many engagements of the war between the states and he escorted President Jefferson Davis with all Confederate Archives to Washington; Ga. where he then surrendered to Union forces.

Add me.  I have many ancestors in fought in the Civil War, including one officer that I know of and direct ancestors who died in action. All of them fought for the South except one (great-something) uncle who left the family farm and enlisted in the Union Army, but I also have ancestors who were from Indiana so I'd like to find out if any of them fought for the Union.

I am trying to add the civil war sticker to my ancestors who were in the civil war. What's the difference between the "regiment" and "unit" lines. If I know that my great grandfather was in Co. B, 88th Indiana Infantry, 14th army corps, what goes where? This does not seem to be covered in the instructions on the Civil War Project page.
by Alison Gardner G2G6 Mach 8 (83.7k points)
Let me take a look. We have had to update that sticker many times.
The Unit is what would be the category.
I’m sorry. I’m actually not able to figure this out myself without playing with it a bit. Let me get back to you.
Okay, this is how it works. You can put anything in the regiment text area but in the unit area you must use the name of the category without the United States part (which is added automatically by the template programming) because that will make a category. If it isn’t right you will get a red category. I fixed it for you. That’s an excellent profile!!

I have an interest in how the civil war affected American society, particularly in small towns, during the war, immediately after the war, and long years after the war.

I'm so excited to find this project.  Both my parents were descendants of Union veterans.  I've posted my great-great-grandfather's daguerrotype on his profile page, WikiTree ID Geisenhener-1.
