Hi Lori -

I own the local history books for Etne, the EtneSoga so will have a look in them. However all the churchbooks for Etne are online. If you know hos birth year you can probably find him in one of these parish registers:

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/kb/browse?counties%5B%5D=12&clerical_parishes%5B%5D=1211P&start_year=1780&end_year=1850&text=
Where do I start?  As far as what Info do I put into the search?
Sorry I've never looked into the history books for Norway, I tried searching just now but I'm not sure what to put in, so sorry for the hasle!  And thank you
Lori -

Amos is not a Norwegian name so perhaps Aamund or ?

The Tesdal farm (spelling not that relevant back then) is located in the Stødle local parish. Here are some of the online records for there:

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/kb/contents/8784?counties%5B0%5D=12&clerical_parishes%5B0%5D=1211P&start_year=1780&end_year=1850&text=

I found an Aamund Tesdal born in 1844 married to a Martha - this record on GENI  which I seem to have created https://www.geni.com/people/Amos-Martin-Tesdahl/6000000057025232043

birth record line 40 here https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8783/65

went to America in 1855

his father was Erik Sjursson b 1804 mother Barbro Amundsdotter Osvag  and they went to Amerika in 1855 also

listed here Etne-soga by Ståle Dyrvik, vol IV "Folket. Stødle sokn" p 366 Tesdal items 59e

send me a message and I can send you scans of those pages (but still under copyright so not postable online)
I would love to join the Norway Project!  I have many profiles originating in Norway.
I'm curious if I can add a profile of a child of Norwegian immigrants to the Norway project.  I only ask because I know certain profiles have Norwegian parents, but not enough sources to make separate profiles for them.
Hi Katy, I'm not sure if I understand the request.  Can you email me back with any detail and links and I'll have a look?  Drop a message to my page or use the private message off my profile please.
Grandfather from Norway and would like to join the Norway Project.  I'm a member of the Sweden Project and it was a great help with my Swedish Grandmother.
My mother’s family comes from Norway. I have a book that traces her lineage back through the Rustung and Orning line.  The book covers several different families as the family branches out.  Some of the family came from Oslo, and also from Eidfjord area.

Hi Konrad.  Thank you for the interest.  This particular project is open to members of wikitree as an internal community.  If you join the tree please let me know.  We do have a community group on google if you are interested but it is not particularly active at the moment.

My Norwegian line begins with my gg grandfather's birth on Svimbøl farm in Tinn/Atrå County, Telemark.  He migrated to the Sand/Suldal area in Rogaland where he married.  In 1814 he immigrated, with his wife and three sons, to Juneau County, Wisconsin in 1857.  They evidently came through Quebec, Canada, though I know of no record for their entrance.
by John Buck G2G Crew (470 points)
Welcome to the project John.  Good to have you join and we look forward to your contributions.  I see you are relatively new to wikitree so please drop me a note if you need help starting off.
you may have some ancestors in common with me, my family also came from Norway (rogeland, oppland and troms) they began immigrating here to wisconsin and minnesota mid 1800s .  my tree on ancestry is public so you can check it out and I have lots of photos going back to 1860s of them.  - Unfortunately I haven't had time to transfer them over to wikitree yet because they don't transfer in the gedcom files. its going to be a future project when I have more time but you are welcome to download any that may fit in your tree :)

I have lived in Norway for many years. I have a couple of Norwegians in collateral lines in my tree (not yet added to wikitree as I joined yesterday). DNA results are beginning to indicate that there are more that I have not yet found.

Hi Lynda, thanks for joining up and volunteering your aid.

I am new to genealogy and to Wikitree.  All of my great-grandparents came from Norway, so I am very interested in this project.

What is a good way for a beginner to get involved?
by Kristi Pagano G2G Crew (460 points)
Hi Kristi, thank you for the interest.  I'll be putting up a "getting started" guide in the next couple of days which will outline how you could help in building out the wikitree..

My name is Robert Olson with my father's paternal line from Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane.  I have one line traced back to ~1500 and would like to find other branches.  My great grandfather Ole Helgeson Haugsgjerd b. 1864) came to USA in 1880.  I would like to be added to the project.
by Robert Olson G2G Crew (440 points)
Hi Robert, welcome to the project.  Thank you for volunteering your service.  We are looking forward to your contributions and please drop me a note back if I can help you get started.

I would like to join the Norway Project.  My Paternal Grandfather was 100% Norwegian.   I've gotten a decent sized tree of my Norway relatives up on Wikitree, which I've been working very hard on.    Most of my relatives come from Telemark, Sogn Og Fjordane, Oppland & Hedmark.

I've gotten semi decent at digging up Norwegian records off of family search.
by Craig Albrechtson G2G6 Pilot (102k points)
Hi Craig.  Awesome.  Thanks for putting your hand up.  Have a look at the project page.  There is a google group which also might provide the opportunity to leverage your talents.

My maternal great-grandparents came from Sogn og Fjordana, Mo i Rana, and probably other areas in Norway.  My earliest brick wall is a great-grandfather who supposedly was from, and returned to Norway, in the early to mid-1900s, but I have no idea where he was from or where he went.  I am somewhat intimidated by my clumsiness when it comes to researching Norwegian records, but I'd like to help if I can.

Hi, welcome to the project.  I certainly agree with your thoughts.  The records can be daunting.  Great to have your help.  I'll be putting up a quick how to guide in the next week or so but drop me a note back if you need some help getting started.

I'm interested. I have a big Norwegian branch starting backwards with my 2nd Great Grandparents. A relative on that side found me earlier this year on Ancestry and gave me this 9 generation list starting with my grandmother. I haven't added many past my 2nd Great Grandparent though because I'm confused on how the naming all went and how I would enter it on here. With a little help though I'm positive I'll be able to get it all on here. She also the sources when she had them in the list.
by Amanda Frank G2G6 Mach 5 (55.4k points)
Hi Amanda, welcome to the project.  Well done on sources.  There will be a distinction between naming conventions between departure and arrival from Norway.  There area a couple of other questions around this on the G2G.  If you need a hand getting a name started in the Norwegian source material please give me a shout.

My maternal grandfather's line is from Norway, and beyond his father, I'm stuck. Looking forward to working on this part of my heritage. Olsen.

Hi Ray, welcome to the project, I've dropped the badge to your page.  If you drop me a separate note with the wikitree ID and any known material or facts that you have I'll see how I can help unblock this pathway.

My far-mor-far and far-mor-mor emigrated from Drammen around 1870, and both died young so I have little information about my Norwegian cousins.  I am hoping DNA ties will help me reconnect to this side of my family tree.  I am pretty good with Swedish records, but have had a hard time finding my way in the Norwegian records so far.  I am a careful, detail oriented researcher.
by Julie Morland G2G Crew (410 points)
Hi Julie, welcome to the project.  Thank you for the comment.  I'm going to be away for about a month but will give you a hand when I get back.

Is there a Project Norway template yet? I just worked on a Norway-related profile for a Wikitree Challenge and wanted to add the template if possible. However, I can't locate a template for the project. Thanks!

After a life time of hearing about the "Swedish" Great Grand Mother I discovered this spring that she is actually Norwegian. And I am, conveniently enough, on my way to Oslo and Trondheim for 3 weeks in July! SO I will be doing so research on Mary Anna Hansen and Peter O Moe, where I am currently brickwalled. I can look into things for others as well while I am there.

Stacy In San Francisco
by Stacy Turner G2G3 (3.3k points)
Hi Stacy.  Wow, hope you had a great trip.  It is a beautiful country.  Did you manage to get through the wall?
Norway was amazing. I looked at a lot of grave stones for Moes, and talked to people about the archives. One Pastor in Oppdal was particularly helpful in understanding how they handle records in the church. The way names were created, which side of the family and the datter and son additions and the multiple names was confusing but I have a better understanding of how to look at the names and the records to see what matches.

One big thing was that in the course of learning all this I was able to locate where somewhat confused people had subliminated two records into one and mistakenly boloxed up the lines. So at the end of the day I know with reasonable surety that while Mary Anna Hansen and Peter O Moe may be related in some more remote way, Arne and Johana Moe are the actual ancestors! That shortened up the sibling list some ; -)

Which leaves me at https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/71913978/person/100113901243/facts Anne Pedersdatter Pettersdatter Vinsnes who shows two husbands that are brothers and two daughters that are prolly the same girl ( https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/71913978/person/100113883680/facts Johana Ramstad) I can't tell yet which was the actual father, so I am working on that now.

It's like working at a knitting knot on one of those endlessly complex Norwegian sweaters. You untangle one area and another area seems to become hopelessly twisted by the changes!

Would it be appropriate to use the Norwegian template for American born Norwegians like my grandfather or is that reserved to indicate Norwegians born in Norway?

Steve in Arizona
by Steve McGillivray G2G Crew (630 points)
Hi Steve.  I see Lena has assigned the badge.  Involvement is really dependent on your skills and the time you have available.  If you have a language skill drop me a line back but if not then the major work of the proejct is in cleaning up biographies, finding and assigning appropriate sources and helping others remove block in their family tree.  Our goal is to collaborate to build one big tree and we look after the Norway part.
