Do you have South African Roots or maybe an extended family line in South Africa?

Join the South African Roots Project. We do not just accept experienced members, but our membership is open to new members on WikiTree as well.

The requirements are simple. After you volunteered on WikiTree:
Sign the Honor Code
Become a WikiTree Genealogist
These two requirements will enable you to work on your own family line.
We recommend that you do the Pre-1700 Certification as well because this will enable you to contribute to all open profiles on WikiTree.

After you have done that, just add an answer (not a comment) and tell us a little about yourself and what you are researching.  

Do not forget to add the tag south_african_roots to your followed tags.

I was born in Northern Rhodesia, but have South African roots, both on the side of my father, Ivor Edward Leck, who was born in Kimberley of English immigrant parents, and of my mother, Joyce Doreen (Deacon) Leck whose English forefathers, the Deacons, came to the Eastern Cape in the1700s.

Thanks to Wikitree,  my personal family tree now has roots that go back from my maternal grandfather Nick Decon via a Huguenot, Pierre Jaubert,  to some 9th Century French kings and beyond.

I have also discovered that Nick's grandmother had a Dutch forefather, Pieter Boshower, who married the daughter of two slaves in Cape Town in the 1680s

And yes, I have found the journey so very interesting and would, therefore, like to join the South African Roots program

Ek praat van slegs die profiele na 1807 m.a.aw. die wat onder SA Roots val en nie die wat onder Cape of Good Hope val nie. (1652-1807)  Laasgenoemde moet jy asseblief nie verander nie. 

As jy die bewyse op WikiTree sit stel ek voor jy skryf / tik die van soos op die bewyse.  As ons dan later die oorspronklike dokumentasie vind en daar is verskille kan ons op daardie stadium 'n verandering maak indien dit nodig is.

Dankie Louis! I would love to be part of this project. With my latest GEDCOM upload I sort of am part of it by default already haha.

I would love to be more connected to the South African community seeking out their/our so varied ancestral roots.

I have ancestral links to van der Merwe's, Smit's, du Toit's and many more. I also have 1820 settler roots as well as "Coloured" links.

Hi everyone!

So glad I got sent this link!!!!!! My whole family is born and bread in SA. Then they were on the list as the first families to be sent to 'Rhodesia' qith Rhodes. I have most of the paperwork for my dads family as they ALL come from England. My mothers dads side is a bit of an issue. Surnames were changed and 1 in particular I can find ANYWHERE :'( I am stuck on Hamman who changed to Hammond, maybe even Hammon and Hammol??!?!?! Last 1 I could find was the Rhodesian pioneer George William. Then the HUGE blank is my GGM... Guiney, born in East london (sylvia Marie Jane) and her father is Joseph... cant find him at all. I absolutely LOVE reasearch and would do it as a job if I could. Hope I can help others, its incredibly interesting to know where you come from xxx

Hi,  I am Joe (O'Carroll-66) and with the majority help from my niece we have mapped almost the entire family back to the 15th century and was  DNA tested to ensure accuracy . We then embarked on moving outward, firstly one relation on all sides of the existing relatives, and then two relations - e.g. my sister-in-laws father and his ancestors. The detail we have found is quite incredible as my ancestors are well documented and there are a number of publications or family written books recording a great deal of data. I recently visited Ireland and saw my grandfathers house and 3 of the many castles my ancestors robbed others of, and plan to visit Turkey next year to see where other family lived at a time when Turkey was a great exporting country. My wife's family is proving difficult and I think that by joining I may be able to enhance the records in that branch of the family tree.

Hi, yes I have South African roots. Everyone except my paternal grandfather has been in South Africa for more than four generations, with many on my mother's side tracing right back to the first fifty years of European settlement.  My husband's side is mostly 1820 settlers (no-one more recent than that. I have been researching these families for around 45 years (my interest started in my teens).  I am currently focussing on the post 1700 phase as this is the most neglected in all the families in which I have an interest, but am also interested in working on the earlier period. As an historian I have experience working with archival sources and enjoy unravelling historical puzzles. Please accept me as part of the project.

Five years ago, myself, the SAG/SAF registers nor the great "1975 VAN DYK boek" new who my great-grandparents were. Well I was one up on "them", I knew my grandparents ;-)
Today I can tell you that Willem Casparus Johannes VAN DYK *23.07.1835 did not have any children by his wife Johanna Margaretha GROENEWALD. He re-married after her death and at the age of 67 had his first child called Willem Johannes, my grandfather.
He had another 5 children, the last born when he was 82 years old!
...but, my "luck" does not end there, Willem Casparus Johannes's grandfather was Andries Nicolaas VAN DYK *cir1780, the bloke the "official" registers could not place and thought that he must have come from the Netherlands! Very unlikely, as he declared that he was from "Cabo de Goede Hoop" at his wedding to (you guessed it) another VAN DYK, Johanna Catharina *cir1787
At this moment we are waiting for DNA results from descendants to see if we can figure out if Andries N. was related to one of the first two VAN DYK brother, Joost & Burgert.

Jy het die meeste van Dyks in jou stamlyn privaat gemaak so dit is moeilik om jou te help met jou stamboom of om bronne na te gaan. Al wat ek wel met sekerheid vir jou kan sê is dat Casper Joh's van Dijk wie met Anna Louisa Johanna Mathee getroud is 1900, 23 jr oud was en sy 28. Maar miskien is dit nie jou familie nie.

Louis, dankie dat jy my onthou het, daai MATTHEE is eintlik die verkeerde een en ek sal die regte informasie vandag bywerk. Die regte een het eers gedurende Desember verlede jaar aan die lig gekom.
Ek het ook nie met opset die profiele privaat gemaak nie, nadat my Gedcom opgelaai was destyds, was van hulle automaties so gemerk.
As daar 'n "knoppie" iewers is by WikiTree om almal oop te maak sal ek dit doen, maar kennis ontbreek my.

Hello

I would like to join the South African Roots Project..

My g/grandmother Salomina Susanna Boswell came from  two ppp families, Visage and Van Dijk. My grandmother, my father and his siblings were all born in S Africa. My grandfather, born in UK went to S Africa in 1890 and became Chief Medical Officer at the Jaggersfontein Diamond Mines.. He was commended for bravery in bringing wounded soldiers into the hospital under fire in the Boer War. He was also Mayor of Jaggersfontein in about 1911. All my first cousins now live in S Africa, so I have many interests in the country which I was fortunate enough to visit in 1989.

Yes, sorry, had to urgently attend to something else.  The book, and the page you uploaded, is copyrighted, You can do transcriptions from it, but you cannot publish a page from the book. It is still a good source for leads to start your research from. Also I need you to have a look at the project's help pages please. You will also have to be more careful about the creation of duplicates. It would be a good idea to check the profiles on your current watchlist for duplicates you created.

Hi

Dit sal 'n voorreg wees om by hierdie projek aan te sluit.  Is nou al 'n paar jaar wat ek probeer om iewers te kom met ons stamboom, maar omdat ek nie meer in SA is nie, is dit nogal moeilik om toegang tot dokumentasie te kry vir die korrekte inligting.  My 2de neef een keer verwyder (nie seker of dit die korrekte Afrikaanse uitdrukking is nie) het ook nou by Wikitree aangesluit en hy het al klaar heelwat inligting gehad en so die boom goed uitgebrei en die konneksie gemaak tot by Krotoa (Eva van Meerhoff).

Sal baie graag ander konneksies met my stamboom wil maak.

I am Alisdair Morison Tait. On my mothers side "Jacob Clote" 1625-1693 is my 10th great grandfather. A stamvader. He helped lay the foundation of the Cape Colony. My father's family arrived from Scotland, and pre-date the 1820 settlers. My 4th Great Grandfather, Murdoch Morison is recorded in the cape on the birth of his daughter in 1797.

I have the start of a tree here on WikiTree and a vast tree on Ancestry.

Yes my roots are 100% South African.

Nobody knows me as Izak.  My mother called me that when....well you know the rest.....and that happened rather often.

At this stage my sources are own recollections, and a document from GISA in Stellenbosch "COETZEE FAMILIE IN SUID_AFRIKA" 1991.  To be used as a guide only of course, the information never to be used as "certain".

 

Ignorance is bliss....pragtige gesegde. Ek het >300 inskrywings gemaak in 3 dae :)....en nog omtrent 7000 Coetzees se (onbevestigde) inligting  Nou begin die (minder maklike) werk om feite te kry.

 

Special interest of course the Coetzee/Coetsee family tree, but also Van Zyl, my mothers side.  Also Stapelberg (my grandchildren)

Count me in too. Most of my ancestry consists of 1860's British immigrants, with some predating that with Dutch/German origins. Baxter, Green, Cusworth, Hunkin, Baumann, Scholtz , De Moldrup are some of the names. By no means an expert, but great if I can contribute with what I've already found out.
