Question

Do you have South African Roots or maybe an extended family line in South Africa?

Join the South African Roots Project. We do not just accept experienced members, but our membership is open to new members on WikiTree as well.

The requirements are simple. After you volunteered on WikiTree:
Sign the Honor Code
Become a WikiTree Genealogist
These two requirements will enable you to work on your own family line.
We recommend that you do the Pre-1700 Certification as well because this will enable you to contribute to all open profiles on WikiTree.

After you have done that, just add an answer (not a comment) and tell us a little about yourself and what you are researching.  

Do not forget to add the tag south_african_roots to your followed tags.

I am a descendant of the du Toit family and Combrinck/Combrink/van Heerden/Haarhof families. I have captured my family tree on all the web based research pages that I could find, and have officially been diagnosed with Geneology Research Disorder. My husband says I have disappeared into a family tree vortex. I need to find all my ancestors, and wish to assist in ongoing projects.

My family background and makeup is probably pretty similar to that of many he other researchers. I'm the descendant of numerous pre and post 1820 settlers with familiar names like Goulding, Pike, Stevens and Bolus. The Cape Town settlers were more middle class and did things like make contributions to UCT and founding the first stock brokers, whereas the 1820 settlers from Port Elizabeth were manual labourers. Social mobility changed all that quite rapidly. Apart from my interest in the development of the footprint around the Eastern Cape and in Cape Town, a sizeable part of the family lived near Viljoenskroon. My challenges are often to do with Catholic families that have not left many records available online. There remain some interesting questions concerning the role (or lack thereof) of a couple of Stevens' in the Lobengula discussions and subsequent Matabele wars.

at the moment I am trying to establish the van der Bank line backwards from my grandfather Zirk Izak van der Bank (father possibly Dirk).  Hoping to connect the dots to Johannes van den/der Bank circa 1722.

My name is Grant McDuling. I was born in Johannesburg and served in the SA Navy for 16 years. I have been researching my tree for around 20 years now and am a descendant of Gen Christiaan de Wet. I'd love to participate in the Boer War project. I now live in Australia and have a branch of the family that migrated to SA in 1901.

Hi Louis, i would like to join the South African Roots project, i'm not sure when my family can to S.A., it looks like the late 1700's. I have a few family members on my tree and the are all South African and if possible like to contribute in building the tree.

I am busy with my family tree, which has both 1820 Settler and French Heugenot roots (as well as some more recent immigrants to RSA).

The more recent arrivals are actually proving the most challenging!

I would love to join. My Mother's side is South African, going back to the first French Huguenots to arrive. The surname I am researching is Du Preez, originally Du Prè. .Hercule Du Preez was the original French Huguenot, and I am descended from his daughter Jeanne Du Pré.

I am Stephanus (Skip) Scheepers, started using Wikitree as a mechanism to document rhe family research my father started. Now I find it hard to stop!  

My main interests are in the era 1820-1920 and specifically the areas where my ancestors lived i.e. Graaff-Reinet, Natal and then North-Eastern Free State.

I have been using WikiTree for a little while now and have specific interest in the Laubscher, Koster & Le Grange branches. I have been liaising with Melt Loubser about the Laubscher side and would like to improve that branch based on information he's been providing me.

Whilst I now live in Australia, I still have quite a lot of family in South Africa.

Hi, 

My name is Ruth Smith (born de Meyer) and I have been doing my Family Genealogy for the past 4 years. The branches that I am focusing on is Smith (Husbands family), de Meyer, van Zyl (Mothers family), Roodt (Mum-in Laws family). The de Meyer family goes back to 1639 details (first one is SA was Pierre 1668). The Roodt family goes back to Daniel Johannes born 1725 (first Roodt in SA).

I would love to be a part of this project.

My mother was born in South Africa. I am interested in the following surnames: Minott, Dednam/Debnam/Debenham, Rickards/Richards, Hayward, Pristow, Hancock, Towning

Particularly interested in Hancock currently, since my great-grandfather Hancock's details are vague.

Actually, I'm missing my great-grandfather Willie Minott's details too and would like to fill those in.

I'm hoping this group is still active as I've been trying for 2 years to find a definitive line for both myself and my husband's family, and have been struggling a lot.

My family is Grobler (Paternal Grandfather Coert/Koert Nicolaas Grobler; Grandmother Martha Elizabeth Grobler, nee Steenkamp) (Maternal Grandfather Christoffel Rudolf Johannes Mouton; Grandmother Elsje Johanna Mouton, nee Klein/Kleyn)
