Do you have South African Roots or maybe an extended family line in South Africa?

Join the South African Roots Project. We do not just accept experienced members, but our membership is open to new members on WikiTree as well.

The requirements are simple. After you volunteered on WikiTree:
Sign the Honor Code
Become a WikiTree Genealogist
These two requirements will enable you to work on your own family line.
We recommend that you do the Pre-1700 Certification as well because this will enable you to contribute to all open profiles on WikiTree.

After you have done that, just add an answer (not a comment) and tell us a little about yourself and what you are researching.

Do not forget to add the tag south_african_roots to your followed tags.

Yes, I have South African roots on my father's side, going back to the original Dutch Settlers.  I am currently working on my own family tree, as well as that of my sister-in-law and brother-in-law.  Surnames (briefly) I am interested in are Moodie, Milton, Volschenk, Scheepers.

Hi, my name is Louise Haggis but I was born Hess. I am a South African descended from the intermarriage between colonists and slaves in the Cape Colony. I was advised to join a project as part of the pre-1700 collaboration efforts. I am researching both my and my husbands ancestory. The South African Roots Project would be my logical home, and I trust best able to assist.

Good morning!

I am local and only truly became interested in genealogy after finding my father 4 years too late in 2014.

My personal intention is to prove every person on the earth is related and thereby disprove evolutionism - but that's another discussion...

Hence I am more of a "generalist" wishing to work and improve all profiles as apposed to specialist eg Boer War.

At https://stephensgenealogy.webnode.com/far-back/ I trace my maternal line back to est 400BC.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to join the project.

I have South African roots in Jacobus Steyn (aka Lossee)*bef 1683, Dirk Dirkse van Schalkwijk *1677, and on my husband's side in Jacques Malan *1665 x Isabeau de Longue in COGH 1699.  I would love to get more information on those family lines, as well as Du_Toit and Praetorius (Pretorius)

Please add me to this project.  Thank you.

Hi I am [[Smit-641|Riël Smit]] and joined WikiTree some time ago, after inheriting my father's genealogy research files and wanting to make it more accessible to other members of the extended family.  Now that I have more time, I am trying to clean up the data, add more sources and fill in the gaps where possible.

My name is Jeanne Munro. I am researching a number of my family members, and all have their roots in South Africa. Ward, Rees, De Beer, McCarthy are my immediate lines but they branch off into many after that. Van Niekerk, Du Bruyn, Geel, Eksteen, Greyling, Loubser, Walters, Jooste, McMahon, McKay and the list just gets bigger. We currently live In New Zealand so I find it hard to get the information I need and would appreciate any help. I get most of my records from Family Search and rely on that website heavily. Look forward to collaborating with you all.

The surnames in my 5th Generation ancestors are: Taylor*, Wenman, Westbury**, Coetzee/Coetzer**, De Lange*, Venter**, Saunders, Trollip, Woodland, Tucker**, Serridge, Godden, Haarhoff and vd Merwe

* = Assumed surname of father of 4th generation aka "dead end", and ** is dead end at 5th generation
