I was recently working on my family tree and I added a profile for Clarence More Vanderwerken (1918-1967) who married Marjorie June Beebe (1921-1981).

When I looked at Family search ( https://familysearch.org/tree/person/MJP8-N9K/details ) and Clarence's family I noticed that you can trace his family all the way back to his Dutch roots. Roeloff Gerritse Van der Werken, Birth 1648 Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands, Death 3 Sept 1728 Halfmoon, Saratoga, New York, United States ( https://familysearch.org/tree/person/LH3W-1W5/details )

I have enough profiles to look after and there is just too many members of his family for me to take on this task.

So I am asking if someone can take on this huge project and work on the family profiles.

Surnames are Vanderwerken, Van Derwerken and Van Der Werken and there may be more.

Thanks

Roelof Gerritse van der Werken is on WikiTree at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Der_Werken-3

That page is not well-developed yet, but it has references to church records and a short biography on the New York State Museum website. Those sources could be a good basis for starting some research and added some biographical information to his profile. The New Netherland Settler Project has information on resources for finding church records and other primary sources that we like to rely on for New Netherland people.

As you'll hear repeatedly in G2G, the family trees that you can find on sites like familysearch aren't reliable as sources, but they can be good places to get clues to lead you to good sources.

I agree that Family Search isn't all that reliable as a source but it was a place to start pointing one in the right direction.  As you go through the various family members there are a lot of questions presented.

Being a member of both Dutch Roots and New Netherlands projects I kinda feel guilty about not taking this on myself, but honestly I can't do this by myself but would be willing to help.

That's why I asked for help and would like to see some of Roelof Gerritse van der Werken's ancestors added.

BTW Carrie I noticed a Isaac Jacob Quackenbush 1695–1747  •  LKPY-1W7 married to a Geertruy Van Der Werken 1676–1707  •  LZ6P-XPR. Any relation to you?

Well, speaking as someone who was a novice about these things just a couple of years ago, it seems to me that the profile for Roeloff Gerritse offers you a great opportunity to develop your skills as a New Netherland researcher. That New York State Museum profile provides a basic outline of his life and links to some other resources, and it's easy to start exploring the Albany Dutch church records on the free website http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/albany/refchurch.html (all the records from 1683 through 1700 are on a single searchable page).

Although secondary sources like the State Museum call him van der Werken or Vanderwerken, chances are good that the Albany baptism records for his children used a patronym like Roelof Gerritsz. Finding his children's baptisms in those records will be a bit of detective work, but you'll start to feel like a pro once you've found them all. And compiling a list of the texts of the church records (as part of the profile) is one of the main tasks that volunteers in the New Netherland project need to undertake when researching a New Netherland ancestor.

Added: If you use your browser to search the Albany church page for 1683-1700 on the string Roel, you'll find a bunch of records for Roeloff Gerritsz (with minor spelling variants), plus a few for other people named Roeloff or Roeloffszen.

Indeed Melissa! All Quackenbushes are related to me. The Quackenbush family has been run through a meat grinder in the FamilySearch tree though; Jacob and Isaac were two different people. See Gail Q's tree https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/11137781/person/-520164994/facts

The New Netherland folk are really jacked up in the FamilySearch tree.

Roelof Gerrits van der Werken  already has a profile, will take a look in the archives ;) No family van der Werken, just one Roelof Gerrits born (baptized) as son of Gerrit Frericks on abt  1 January 1650 in Meppel, Drenthe, the Netherlands (mother not mentioned also just a patronymic Gerrits, so no last name yet. Will look if this Roelef Gerrits might be our Roelof..

Perhaps if we can get a volunteer, one could start with Clarence More Vanderwerken and work their way backwards.  That way the connection is made, and hopefully the easier part gets completed while the more complex profiles are worked on.

Sounds like perhaps a good candidate for a challenge ? Not sure if or what projects are organizing challenges as well ?

Here is another Dutch family that needs to be researched.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_Haaren-11
by Melissa McKay G2G6 Mach 3 (38.0k points)

'van Haren'  (known for the shoes in the Netherlands) so who knows perhaps they are related somehow ;)

Maybe somewhere in past but looks like this part of the family emmigrated to the US in mid 1800's and Ivo Van Haren didn't start manufacturing until after the second world war.

Yes it probably just is indicating their early ancestors were born in or near Haren

According this online genealogy his father was Venus Van Haaren, who was a son of:

Peter van Haren (original name might be Pieter, because this name often is translated to Peter) who was born 12 May 1851 The Netherlands - died 1919 in Bay City, Michigan, USAson of Gotfried van Haren Now here's a Godfried van Haren  (but probably too early) and here is an even earlier one Godfried van Haren. If the Dutch naming system (names/patronymics repeated for many generations) was used, and if this is correct of course, the family perhaps can lead , or be traced back, to this very early van Haren family

Here's an interesting source with info for a lot of families including the Van Haaren family:

Michigan County Histories History of Bay County.Butterfield, George Ernest, 1883-, Fuller, George N. (George Newman), 1873-1957., Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society.

from page 275:  Gottfried Van Haaren, secretary and treasurer of P. Van Haaren & Sons, long distance hauling and storage, First near Sheridan street, Bay City, was born in Bay City, May 21, 1887. His father, Peter Van Haaren, who was born in Holland, May 12, 1851, came to the United States with his parents in 1854. He had a fine physique and was reputed to be the most powerful man physically in Bay City. The Van Haarens settled on a homestead claim of forty acres in Bay county. Peter Van Haaren, in 1880, established a transfer and truck business, in which he took his sons as partners in 1912. He lived to see the erection of the firm's large storage warehouse in 1914....

and there's more about this family, this Gottfried was a brother of Venus Van Haaren, who, according the online genealogy, would be the father of Grant Junior Van Haaren (Van Haaren-11)

Gottfried and Venus's father, Peter Van Haaren, died January 31, 1919. His wife and their mother, Johanna (Boutreur) Van Haaren, who was born in Belgium, July 6, 1855, died September 7, 1898, in Bay county.

Venus Van Haaren was married July 4, 1914, to Hazel May Grant, of Bay City. They have three children: Grant, Johanna Carrie and Donald Venus.  He is a thirty-second degree Mason, Shriner and Knight Templar and an Elk, and is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Venus Van Haaren and family reside at 1218 North Sherman street, Bay City.

And right after the info about the Van Haaren family....info about a shoe dealer and his family :P

Here's Gottfrieds first marriage and here's Gotfrieds second marriage  + marriage WWII draft (now named Gottfried John Van Haaren) and his death + burial

Second Marriage of father Peter ? 14 June 1899 Michigan Marriages Peter Van Haaren and (nurse) James Wright (?) his father is mentioned also and named Godfrey Van Haaren and it looks like the brides name was Jennie Wright Census 1910 Peter and Gennie Van Haaren here a daughter Bessie Van Haaren (age 20) and son Venus Van Haaren (age 18) are mentioned as well. (both children from the first marriage)

I think this 1880 Census is of Peters father Godfrey Van Heren and some younger siblings (it says father was born in Holland in 1819) according this census there was a younger brother John..he might be this John Van Haaren who died in 1923 , and lucky us, his parents both are mentioned Godfrey Van Haaren and Ida Van Garven

Here's a Godefridus van Haaren born 18 September 1819 in Oirschot and the best part, this child is a son of Peter van Haaren and his wife Louisa van der Schoot (see scan) and .... here they are Godefridus Van Haaren and his wife Ida van Gerwen + their children Petrus Willem van Haaren born 12 May 1851 in 's Hertogenbosch and Johanna Elisa van Haaren born 23 September 1853 in Oostelbeers . If the other info from Michigan is correct they after their daughter was born emigrated in 1854 ..

Here's the marriage in 1810 in Oirschot of Peter Huybers van Haaren and Louisa Jans van der Schoot according the marriage record Peter isn't an adult (not 21) at the marriage so he might have been this Petrus van Haaren baptized 10 March 1792 in Oirschot son of Hubertus Petrus van Haaren and Anna Maria Govardus van den Boom (all Latinized names) So this probably is where the name Godefridus (Latin Govardus) is coming from.

As soon as I have some spare time I'll add some profiles for them, or.. if anyone else is interested, feel free to add them and connect Grant Junior Van Haaren to his Dutch ancestors ;)
Just reading this now and don t have much spare time this week......... But love to dive into puzzles. Remind me please.

Just brushed my teeth :D Night you!!
Wikitree luv!

Oooops, should have read better, duplicated most of Bea's work. Sorry Bea!

This could very well be what we are looking for:

Godefridus van Haaren, born 18 September 1819 in Oirschot, Noord-Brabant, son of Peter van Haaren and Louisa van der Schoot.

Godefridus married Ida van Gerwen 3 November 1849 in 's-Hertogenbosch.

They are the parents of Petrus Wilhelmus van Haaren, born 12 May 1851 in 's Hertogenbosch.

Godefridus (with family no doubt) emigrated  in 1854...

And here the 1880 census  listing Godefridus as Godfrey Van Heren:

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW9R-SYS : 10 August 2016), Godfrey Van Heren, Portsmouth, Bay, Michigan, United States; citing enumeration district ED 30, sheet 677A, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0572; FHL microfilm 1,254,572.

No problem Jan, ashame you had to search for all of it as well though, and if you like feel free to add profiles + the sources, perhaps (if we're lucky) we can connect them (to already present Dutch lineages) somewhere as well already ?

I ve been working on the Dutch Bibbe's, later Beebe after emigration to USA .(LNAB of the spouse of Clarence Vanderwerken) But got stuck on the closed profiles. But worked on this one for instance: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bibbe-21  There must be a way to connect them I suppose.

Don t think they are related. :/ Back to the  Vanderwerken
