Looking for info on the Mullins of Letterdeen

+1 vote
Hi, I am searching for any information on the Mullin family who lived in Letterdeen, Clifden. They lived in the farmhouse in Letterdeen which was turned into a bed and breakfast (don't think it is still operating). Patrick Joseph was born 1822 and he married Mary (nee O'Carroll). They emigrated to South Africa aboard the HMS Birkenhead in 1852. I am interested in any info regarding his parents, siblings, etc., should there been any available.

Hi Trevor,

I am sorry I was unable to find your ancestors on Find my past, what I did find was maybe descendants, There was a Patrick Joseph MullEn  age 40yrs, who died 7 April 1914, buried with his mother Age 73 yrs died 29 Oct 1911, and a sister Martha  who was 48 yrs and died 22 August 1912. All at South End Cemetery.

I tried to find the list of passengers for the HMS Birkenhead. This was the boats final voyage as it sunk on 26 February 1852 and all muster rolls and lists were lost.

50 years later there was 1902 there was a Roll Call of Survivors as they thought there was only one left, but  this was not the case.

There is documentation for a Patrick Mullin as part of the Army , but I cannot conclude if this is your Patrick or another.

Cheers Rionne

Thank you for this.

Unfortunately, the Patrick Joseph MullEn you speak of is not the same person as Patrick Joseph MullIn died in 1896 in King Williams Town,, South Africa.

Yes, Patrick was a Major in the Army, hence being on the ill-fated HMS Birkenhead with his family (all having survived)
