At what point are you stuck? Are there census and other records you can look up? Is your ancestor from another country and you haven't been able to find data in that country? If you've exhausted every source of information you can try to locate a couple of male descendant with the same surname as your ancestor who are from different branches of his family and who are willing to contribute DNA. You need  contributors descended from two different lines of your ancestor to make sure you have the correct DNA.

It's probably just me... but I recommend you try a different path.  Rethink the problem, re-analyze yor data, look under another rock and then go back again because the data has often changed.  Only when you know there is no potential for data, do I recommend you give up, otherwise... hope springs eternal!
