Importing GEDCOM for update

0 votes
Because I want to be as much as possible provider-independent, I use a desktop genealogy program (currently Familienbande) for maintaining my database.

Since the first upload of GEDCOM data with about 250 persons my database grew to about 850 people.

When I try to upload now the extended GEDCOM file, WikiTree asks me to merge the already existing 250 entries manually (!) with the previously imported entries.

Of course this makes sense if other people than myself have meanwhile made changes to entries which need to taken into account, but I suppose this is not the case for almost all of the 250 entries.

What solution do you recommend in this case?

Unless you split the GEDOM to remove the duplicate profiles you will have to merge the duplicates later and I think that you will find that it takes longer to merge and do the post merge cleanup than it would to just update the existing profiles manually.

Uploading a gedcom into WikiTree is a two step process

  1. Gedcome compare -- this is where you look for existing duplicates and can mark them to skip the final import step.
  2. Peer review and Actual import.

If you don't skip the pre existing ones, then you will create duplicate and have to merge them back together. Because importing will never update, only create new.

You will also have to manually connect relationships to any existing WikiTree profiles.

Thanks for your replies.

Maybe my question was not exact enough:
Actually I don't want to skip duplicates but overwrite them with a version which I updated offline.

From what I could see, WikiTree does not allow to overwrite profiles with a newer version from a GEDCOM import even if it's from the same author and the profile was not altered in WikiTree in the meantime.

Identifying, checking and updating profiles manually one by one is frankly speaking not an option for me. In this case I would have to skip these about 250 profiles even though I have updated information available now.
That's correct, WikiTree's import process will never update an existing profile or previous import.
