How do you handle DNA confirmed connections with missing generations?

I have 3 different lines where DNA confirms a relationship but one or two of the generations are missing.

For instance, I am a direct descendant of Theophilus Norwood 1699 South Carolina. I can absolutely prove my Great grandfather was Daniel Norwood 1815. His father was William but I can't find proof.

Another instance, I am directly related to William Riley Stricklin who is confirmed by YDNA to be a direct male descendant of William Tapp Chief of the Wicocomico Indian Nation of Virginia. Somewhere along the line someone was adopted into the Stricklin family.

How do you handle this when YDNA confirms a relationship but you don't have the line of descendency?

What comes to mind for me is just a lot more research. Maybe not from the bottom up (IE you to the DNA confirmed connection) but from the top down (IE the DNA confirmed connection to you) to help fill it in. I would also work with other people interested in these people or any projects related to them to help bridge the gap. You could pose the question to the request for geneology help section for each person as well. Hope this helps!

See

and for an example

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Roberts_Y-STR_Group_1

but you can't click "confirmed with DNA" if the people are missing.

I am in the exact same situation with my direct paternal line. I can "prove" my lineage up through my 5th gr-granddad Arthur Goodman (1786 VA - 1868 KY). But my Y-DNA shows that I am likely a descendant of Benjamin Goodman (died 1735 VA). My closest Y-DNA matches are all facing the same genealogical challenge. They trace their paternal lineage up to a Goodman who was born in the late 1700s/early 1800s but then hit a firm brick wall. I hope one day we can all iron out our exact connection to Benjamin and each other, but this is a heavily researched family and still I have no real leads.

I do wish there were some way to use the Wikitree DNA features to "link up" with our known ancestors like my Benjamin. For now I just plan on including this info in the Goodman wikitree profiles I collaborate on.
