Information on George Ham's, 1748-1828 [Ham-975], first wife.

George Ham's first wife reportedly was ‘Forty Wife’, mother of Joshua Ham. She was born in 1753. They married in 1769. Not much is known about Forty Wife. She was supposedly an American Indian (Cherokee Tribe) that George met and married. Later she reportedly moved to Illinois before George’s marriage to his second wife. Unfortunately I have no documentation supporting these rumors, just vague history passed down through family member to family member. If this story is true it would explain the age differences between Joshua Ham and his other siblings, about 9 years, born to George's second wife Rachel Garvin. It’s obvious that Joshua was born before his father’s marriage to Rachel Garvin. Does anyone have additional information or documentation to support this theory? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Tom,

I know a little bit about your Ham family's origins before they were in Pendleton District, SC. They actually came from Randolph County, NC, which is why Joshua Ham was able to "witness" the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. It is likely that Joshua's father was named Nehemiah Ham. Nehemiah accompanied him to Pendleton District and was quite a bit older. Also coming with them were some Williams family members on Mary's side. I connect through the Williams. There was Isaac Williams and Edward Williams, in particular. I actually have Joshua's name on one document here in Randolph County, NC -- a road assignment. But he left when he was quite young. This came to mind today because I actually found an atDNA match for my father descended from Joshua's son James. The link, however, is probably through Mary Williams. I descend from a Williams family in the very same area of the county and all of them are proven connected by yDNA. Write to me if you want to know more. Civilisation75@yahoo.com.
