When comparing records, am I supposed to look at all records or the ones with the same colored dot?

All records. The colored dot refers to the privacy level of the profile, and it's entirely possible that an Open profile and a Public profile (or, for that matter, an Open profile and a Private profile) could match.

If the profile that matches yours or matches the one you want to add isn't Open, then you won't be able to edit it and might not be able to make a relationship between it and another profile. In that case, you'll need to contact the profile manager of the other profile and ask whether they can add you to the profile's trusted list.
