William Codgbrook MUIRHEAD

Question

William was born in Little Bowden, Northamptonshire in 1856. He was the son of Samuel MUIRHEAD and Hannah (Codgbrook). I have information which shows that he lived in South Africa for many years, but died in London, England 1936.

Hi father Samuel was a tea dealer, born in Scotland and lodged with the Codgbrook family in Northampton in 1841, he married the daughter Hannah in 1844 and was still living Northampton in 1851. The couple had three children Mary (n~1846) Eliza Janet (n~1848) and William Codgbrook (n~ 1856)

Any further information on Samuel's origins (born~ 1817 Scotland) and more about his son's life in South Africa would be very interesting

Regarding Samuel, to make it easier is there any known middle initial?  Do you have his marriage certificate (details below)?

1841 Census gives Samuel's age as 35 so born 1806-1811 (scotland) & Hannah = 15

(Hannah's mother is 50 yo Elizabeth) but some of this information appears inaccurate - see below.

 

Hannah's christening (I00726-5, 23 Dec 1821) shows she is older...

(https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NVFH-JL6) her age was rounded down to 15 in the 1841 census instead of up to 20 as it should have been.

1851 Census S Murhead & Hannah are 33 & 30 (Hannah's age is now correct) so Samuel born 1818 scotland (Mary 64 yo widow mother - who is this?)

 

All of the above gives us a large age range for Samuel which makes it difficult to isolate birth records.

There are at least seven possible on familysearch.

 

Perhaps a middle initial will help you refine those...
