Does anyone have any information regarding Samuel Purchase Hillier?

I'm looking for information related to Samuel Purchase Hillier, specifically his parents. He was born in East Chinnock, Somerset, England on September 4, 1848. He came to Canada in 1868. Comments on the source that I have linked below state that his mother is Mary Hillier, as well as potential grandparents, James Hillier/Hellyer and Hannah Patten, but his father's name is not listed. It is possible that he was born out of wedlock, should Hellier be his mother's maiden name, but there is no evidence to support this.

In the comment section of the page linked above, my cousin has listed some information but we have lost contact and I am unable to figure out whether her information is speculated or has a solid evidence base.

Ancestry links have led me to a James Hillier, husband of a Mary Hillier who gave birth to a son of the same name in the same year, but I am unable to confirm this or find any other concrete information regarding his father or mother.

His birth is recorded without a mother's maiden name which usually indicates an unmarried mother:

                Name:                 Mother's Maiden Surname:
                HELLIAR, SAMUEL  PURCHASE       -
GRO Reference: 1848  S Quarter in YEOVIL  Volume 10  Page 553

His entry in the 1851 census also confirms his mother Mary's unmarried status:

"England and Wales Census, 1851," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGGB-74J : 24 July 2016), Samuel Hellier in household of Mary Hellier, East Chinnock, Somerset, England; citing East Chinnock, Somerset, England, p. 23, from "1851 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO HO 107, The National Archives of the UK, Kew, Surrey

As to potential grandparents, I do see a Mary Hellier aged 19 living in Haselbury Plucknett in the 1841 census:

"England and Wales Census, 1841," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ1J-TKP : 30 October 2015), Mary Hellier in household of James Helliar, Haselbury Plucknett, Somerset, England; from "1841 England, Scotland and Wales census," database and images, findmypast (http://www.findmypast.com : n.d.); citing PRO HO 107, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey

Her parents are James and Hannah. In 1841 adult ages were meant to be rounded down to the nearest five so the websites automatically change an age to a range [age, age+4] and back out a range of years, but they do this even when the age wasn't rounded down! So ignore the age range - she was 19. The 1841 census was also later in the year than all subsequent ones (6 June) so if the 1841 and 1851 ages are accurate we can say that Mary was born between 31 March and 5 June 1822. That still leaves the question of why Edith isn't present but it was commonplace for girls of that age to be working as servants in another household.

In the 1861 census Samuel Helyer, age 12 b East Chinnock  Somerset is a farm labourer boarding at the home of another farm labourer, Thomas Eastment  and his wife Mary  in Hardington Mandeville, Somerset.( its about 2 and a half miles from East Chinnock)

Its by no means a rule but I have often found that the father's name is used as a middle name for a base born child.

Coincidentally ?, 3 households below the address  where Samuel is living in the 1861 census   is a family headed by Robert Purchase, 54, Farm labourer from North Perrott Somerset, They have several children from 23 downwards. (edit lots of Purchases in Hardington Mandeville in 1851)

Parish registers sometimes contain the name of the father; some parish clerks made comments . I had a look on Ancestry who have some images of Somerset records but the register they had stopped at 1846. The Somerset  Heritage centre at Taunton https://www.swheritage.org.uk/online-catalogues  is probably where they are deposited  (also the Somerset and Dorset Family History  Society at Sherborne has transcriptions and  might be able to help http://www.sdfhs.org/ )

Also see https://www.genguide.co.uk/source/bastardy-bonds-amp-documents-parish-amp-poor-law/140/ (but note 1848 a bit late for most records and in any case not many survive)

                Hello Matthew and Helen,

This appears to be his marriage cert.  He married using the alias mentioned in the article you attached.  Parents listed as Samuel and Mary Hillier.

Also, on his death cert., his father is listed as Samuel Hillier.

                Marriage Cert:

"Ontario Marriages, 1869-1927," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMN4-X84 : 10 April 2015), James Garland and Mary Jane Oxford, 21 Jan 1876; citing registration , Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, Archives of Ontario, Toronto; FHL microfilm 1,863,647.

Thank you very much for the help, Mary! Perhaps searching this alias in the future will help me locate some more information, as I had only been searching for his birth name. :)
You are welcome!  But it makes me wonder if James Garland was his birth name and Samuel Hillier could have been a stepfather?  Or it could be the other way around.
