Are Royal Navy records available for men stationed in Durban, Natal during WWII (±'43 to '48)?

Tommy McDonald's (b ± 1925, Eng?) son was born in Durban on 30/12/1948 & I've been told that he died out at sea from double pneumonia but had seen a photo of his son prior to his death so I'm assuming he died circa 1949. The mother of his child, Nora, a spinster, born in Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa married a widower from England on 27/06/1950.
