Family Tree DNA & Ancestry

Not really a question, but a point of information --

I opted to use Family Tree DNA because they offered additional tests, even though I use Ancestry for much of my research.  Now that the autosomal results are in, I find out that I cannot import them into Ancestry.  I am really ticked that Ancestry will only use their own DNA test results!

I highly recommend uploading your raw data to Gedmatch, which will allow you to match with others from 4 DNA testing companies - for free!

But you can download a GEDCOM from Ancestry and upload it here. :-)

Then add your DNA test information to WikiTree and WikiTree will help you make connections through out our great big ole shared tree!

I'm not sure why you'd expect Ancestry.com to accept results from other companies.  However if you want to compare results from many companies you need to check out GEDmatch which will compare the au tests from all the major players.  It will also let you see where your matches are with other people in terms of chromosome and location.

For future reference, if you are planning to test anyone else, you can do the autosomal test at AncestryDNA then upload the data to FTDNA Family Finder.

FTDNA stores a DNA sample for at least 25 years so it is available for future DNA testing improvements.  An AncestryDNA to FTDNA transfer is only for the autosomal results and not the sample.
So I do autosomal on Ancestry, upload to GEDmatch and FTDNA, then buy a mtDNA or yDNA on FamilyTreeDNA to get the 25 year sample being saved.
Yes.  Once you get a Family Tree DNA kit number then under that account you should order a Y-DNA or mtDNA test.  Family Tree DNA will mail you a kit to collect your DNA which they will test and store.
