How do you Categorize for DNA research?

When working with DNA, how do you use WikiTree's categorization ability, feature, to help you?

For example:

I use known familial SNP's or Haplogroups appended to Location to follow the migratory patterns of the original Templeton's to America. When someone contacts me who is a descendant of the Templeton's who went through Indiana to points west during a certain time frame, I can be pretty sure that they are directly related to Robert Templeton who immigrated to SC and was awarded land in 1772. I know this because an entire community banded together from Bethany (Clinton Area of SC), which included some of his descendants, and left for Indiana.

Templeton DNA by Location

How are YOU using categorization to further your DNA work on WikiTree?

I notice there are now 1,414 Templeton DNA connections on Wikitree so I updated the statistic. Hope that's ok.

I religiously use the AncestryDNA Circles categories for anyone whose circle I belong to.  I will use the category on the specific person's profile, as well as their children (as long as I have a source showing parental relationship).  I think this could be helpful while searching because someone can just click on that category and see all the profiles in there...it could help lead them to something they were searching for.

Great Summer!
There has been a lot of discussion previously on G2G regarding AncestryDNA circles, here is the old thread. https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/205350/category-for-ancestrydna-circles?show=205350#q205350

There are times when males with the same or similar surname are a Y-DNA match but their shared direct paternal line ancestor is unknown.  There is a category for each of those groups.  Here is one for one Roberts family: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Roberts_Y-STR_Group_1

There are also times when people are an mtDNA match and trace their direct maternal lines to the same geographic area but their shared direct maternal line ancestor is unknown.  There is also a category for each of those groups:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:H6a1a_mtDNA_Group_2

I use categories quite extensively for DNA match classification.  Mainly I have them all linked to my personal category page - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Coat-12

I have an Autosomal DNA confirmation page for me  which includes information about progress https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Autosomal_DNA_Confirmations_-_Coat-12.  This includes links to all known DNA testers who have confirmed matches to me.  I also link to relevant name studies.

Within that category, I have free space pages set up for my 4 grandparents line, where I am consolidating my DNA confirmation information  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DNA_-_COAT_paternal_line_confirmed_ancestors These are actually the sources on each ancestors profile, but having it all in one place helps me to remember where to focus my attention next.  I also include tentative confirmations here that are awaiting triangulation.

I also use what I call 'DNA Ancestor of interest' categories' where I am a linking potential ancestors, that have been identified by DNA matches that I am researching, by kit number, looking for connection.  Ancestors come and go in these as they are proven/disproven. These are also linked back to any DNA Circles for possible NAD's identified by Ancestry.  I don't add all DNA circles just the NAD's.  Having possible ancestors listed in one place helps if they start to come up multiple times. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:DNA_AOI_194406

I have also started to document triangulated groups and inking them by category to the surname name studies hoping to have others find them and provide input - still works in progress https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:BRITTON_-_DNA_Triangulated_Groups%2C_Coat-12

I am also working on linking a couple of FTDNA DNA projects to Wikitree projects:

Bristol Channel (aa project set up to help understand how our 3 YDNA 111 markers matches connect!!
