Philip Stamma dedicated his 1737 chess book to William Stanhope or Lord Harrington. It seems that the Lord helped Stamma bring his family to England from Paris after a French court problem. This has been expanded upon in the British Chess Magazine 2004 Oct/Nov.

It appears the Lord was a keen player. Can this be verified? Thanks Bob Meadley
