Documenting Name Changes At or After Emigration to the USA

+5 votes
I have documentation from one generation with a last name "McGuire" and later documentation that show that same person (and all of his children) with a last name of "Maguire". Separately I have plans to include relatives whose names were changed upon arriving in the US. For example "Masavitch" to "Savage". What is the best way to document this type of change where the last name at birth doesn't match the last name later in life?

You should explain the name history in the Biography section of the profile -- also cite and describe any records you have that document the transition in the names.

In the data section, the Last Name at Birth should be the name the person was born with. The name they used at the end of their life (or currently, if still living) goes in Current Last Name. Any other last names they used, or were known by, go in Other Last Names, separated by commas.
