Conundrum:

re: Merrill-671/247 merge - what is going on?  The proposed Merrill merge shows Merrill-671 (PM Lamar Ross) and Merrill 274 (PM Conan Wilson), and they are both male and the same person.
#9 on Merge page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:BrowseMatches

Mary Lou Merrill (no PM) is also Merrill-247.

WikiTree profile: John Merrill

I see that you merged the two John Merrill profiles, but you merged them in the wrong direction . . .  :(    His father and all of his siblings have the spelling of Merrill.  You merged the Merrill profile into the Merrell profile.  You commented in the mege comment section that Merrill was the correct spelling, but then you merged it into Merrell. . .To fix it, I went in and changed the LNAB to Merrill.  Please be careful when you handle merges to merge in the correct direction (i.e. that the profile being merged into is the correct LNAB).  Thanks.

I''m confused.  The merge feature forces the newest ID into the oldest? When I get it wrong the program directs which way to merge. And because I'm not the PM, I cannot change LNAB

Direction of a merge:

One profile is merged into another. It's not that the two profiles are combined into a new, third profile. Therefore, the "direction" of a merge matters.

We always merge a new duplicate into the original, first profile.

The only exception is when the original profile had an incorrect Last Name at Birth. The Last Name at Birth forms part of the WikiTree ID, e.g. Franklin-1.

So I should not have done that merge because I cannot change LNAB.

No more merges for me.

The system only forces the merge into the oldest profile when the LNAB is exactly the same.  When it's different, you have to be sure to merge into the profile that has the correct LNAB.  You merged, as mentioned, into the wrong profile.
