June 2017 Connectors Challenge

Hello Connectors!

It's time to begin another month of connecting the unconnected across WikiTree. We'll get the project page updated soon with last month's tallies, but for now, it's time to start connecting!

May's top connector was Jayme Arrington with 42 connections made.

Connectors connected  profiles to The Tree in May, and the total since the beginning of the challenge is . 

Thanks to all of you who participated in last month's challenge May Connector Challenge. If you haven't checked out the Connectors Chat page, you should! There is a lot of chatter there about what everyone is working on.

Now on to the Connectors Challenge Rules:

1. Pick any WikiTree profile which is not connected to the main tree. (In other words, that profile does not have a box at the bottom of the page, showing the degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon, Rosa Parks, and Queen Elizabeth II of the Commonwealth Realms.) You can look for unconnected profiles using the Unconnected People tool, the Unconnected Profiles category, the Unlinked_Profiles category, or you may run across an unconnected profile in the regular course of your research.

2. Either add a new profile for a first degree relative (parent, spouse, sibling, or child) of the person on that profile as a link toward a connected profile, or else connect an existing profile on WikiTree to the profile you're working on.

3. Add a source to the profiles involved in the connection showing the relationship between the two profiles. This could be a census record listing a family, a marriage record, a death record listing the spouse and/or parents, a birth record listing the parents, or any source which demonstrates that the two profiles should be connected to one another. Your source needs to be cited as closely to the style recommended on our Sources help page as possible to count towards your tally.

4. If you are adding a new profile, add a second, independent source for that profile. (For example, if you add a spouse because of a marriage record, then look for a birth or death record for the spouse you're adding.) (Note: The reason for this rule isn't to discourage you from adding people. But as you have probably already learned, even official documents frequently misspell names, so adding an independent confirmation of the name helps to save other researchers time in trying to find records that don't exist, because the person's real name was not the same as showed up in the linking document.)

5. Answer this post, creating a numbered list, and including the two profiles and the kind of source you used to make the connection. (For example: "1. Smith-123 to Jones-456 - marriage".) You only need to reply once. As you make more connections, just edit your post to add your new connections.

6. If you connect a profile which completes a connection trail either for an isolated profile or an unconnected tree, please add "Connected!" at the end of the line which made the connection. We count those connecteds towards your tally.

7. The tally is of branches/unconnected profiles connected to the WikiTree tree, not sources or profiles added. That said, if you can add a number of sources to a profile, all the better, and sometimes a connection will take a number of profiles to get added. Every one is different, and each one makes our tree better. So, in short, we'll count each "connected!" we see.

8. If either or both profiles you connect did not have good sources before and were already on WikiTree, then you can also count those sources towards the Sourcerers Challenge.

9. All participants who do not already have a Connectors Project badge, will get one. Winners each month-the person with the most connections made to the tree-will get the Connection Challenge Winner badge, and the Top Connector each month with get a spiffy template to wear on their profile page. Stats will be kept on the Connectors Challenge page, just like we do for the Sourcerers Challenge.

I have my own pet project running to add and connect as many Kellas names as possible into one tree - there are only a few hundred in NZ, Australia and Canada. Should I join the Connectors Challenge?

I did a search of unconnected Kellas and found some managed by you. By all means, join the Challenge. When you're done with your Kellas, you can pick another name to work on. We can use all the help we can get.

I am trying to get my head around merging and what counts for the connectors challenge. If I complete a merge that I didn't propose and it connects someone up, does that count? I understand from something else I read, if I propose a merge, but I can link an unconnected person up to a connected person in the process, that still counts as then it doesn't need to wait until the merge is completed. Is that right? Also if there are 4 children, and each one needs to be linked up to the father (for instance) does that count as 4 connected or 1 connected. Thanks

If you complete the merge, you made the connection. I recommend adding an individual to make the connection, then propose the merge. If children have to be added to connect them, each one counts. If children are attached to an unconnected parent, and the parent gets connected, only the parent counts as a connection.

Merges don't require sources, just additions of spouse or children.

Great, that's good. Thanks you! Your comment alerted me to a problem further back on a line that I had merged duplicates on. The merging was fine, but I'll get back to the PM about the earlier inconsistencies. Always need to check sources!!!

I would like to give this a go. I may be slow but will do what I can.  Here are my first attempts, My sources are all from FamilySerch.

1. I determined that  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ross-8718 Thomas Jefferson Ross  is husband to  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spracklin-8   Lydia Spracklin which was an existing profile and connected to the tree.  Joined them through marriage, Census and children born or married. "connected!"

2.Also https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ross-8686  Ray Virda son to Thomas Jefferson and Lydia  is connected to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Spracklin-8   Lydia Spracklin, is his mother.  Joined him through marriage and birth. "connected!"

3.Proposed a Merge of Ewing-1440 (corrected wife) not connected into Ewing-1446 is connected - son Ewing-1719 (added marriage and Census 1880) married to Cox-18269 which I added (marriage, Census 1850, 1880) who's father Cox-9548 is connected - merged and "connected!"

Here's one I am very happy about:

1. Michel de Montaigne is connected again. The connection goes through his uncle Raymond Eyquem de Montaigne, who married, as his second wife, a royal descendant. The information comes from a 19th century book about Montaigne's origins and family and different nobility books (nobiliaires). Here goes:

Added Gilles de Harpedane, son of Jean de Harpedane and Marguerite de Valois (she was the daughter of Charles VI and Odette Champdivers). Connected Gilles to his (existing) wife, Guillemette de Luxembourg. Added their son, Charles Harpedane de Belleville, and his wife, Jeanne de Durfort. Added their daughter, Renée de Belleville. Connected Renée to her husband, Raymond Eyquem de Montaigne (brother of Montaigne's father, Pierre Eyquem de Montaigne).

This also connects Sainte Jeanne de Lestonnac, who was Montaigne's niece. This also connects Montaigne's great friend Etienne de la Boétie, who was the stepfather of Montaigne's sister-in-law Jacquette d'Arsac (wife of Montaigne's brother Thomas).

I realised after I connected him to his parents and siblings that he was already connected through his wife/son. Please don't include him. I'll edit to someone new if I make any new connections. :-)
